Hazel has been waiting far too long for her happy ending. While the average length of stay for dogs in the Arizona Humane Society’s care is just 12 days, Hazel has now been waiting more than 50 days for someone to see just how special she is. This 2-year-old female Rhodesian Ridgeback mix weighs in at a perfect 43 pounds—big enough for adventure, small enough for couch cuddles. 

Hazel is a true one-of-a-kind dog and a field trip and sleepover extraordinaire! During a recent sleepover with a volunteer, Hazel proved herself to be the perfect house guest. She's house-trained, super friendly with everyone she meets and knows her "sit" command. She offers the best of both worlds: playful when it's time for fun and cuddly when it's time to relax.

The Arizona Humane Society is raising urgent concerns about a worsening pet overpopulation crisis in the Valley and beyond, as shelters continue to see record-breaking intake numbers and rising strain on resources. In 2025, the organization took in more than 25,000 dogs and cats - the highest intake in over a decade - and projects that number could rise to 28,000 animals in 2026 if intervention efforts are not expanded.

Officials say the surge reflects a combination of factors including the long-term impact of paused spay and neuter services during the COVID-19 pandemic, rising veterinary care costs and ongoing irresponsible breeding practices.

Across the country, shelters suspended routine sterilization procedures during 2020, a disruption that continues to have lasting effects. At the same time, veterinary costs have increased by approximately 40 percent, placing financial pressure on pet owners and, in some cases, leading to pet surrenders when families can no longer afford care. For comparison, Maricopa County shelters reported intake of approximately 9,000 pets last year alone, underscoring the scale of the growing regional challenge.

“The reality is that we cannot adopt our way out of this crisis,” Valley Philanthropist Ann Siner said. “The only true solution is spay and neuter. If these numbers continue to rise unchecked, more pets across Arizona will face euthanasia simply because there is nowhere for them to go.”

In response, Siner has pledged $600,000 to launch a matching donation campaign aimed at expanding spay and neuter access across the state. As part of the initiative, she will match individual donations of $1,000 or more up to the full $600,000 goal.

“It breaks my heart to see so many pets in need with nowhere to go, so I decided to give $600,000 and challenge people in Arizona to step up and help,” Siner said. 

The program will prioritize dogs weighing 40 pounds or more in zip codes with low sterilization rates, offering free spay and neuter vouchers to qualified pet owners in an effort to reduce unwanted litters and shelter intake.

“The Arizona Humane Society is so grateful for Ann’s long-time support and vision for spay/neuter as the most proactive way to end animal suffering,” said Lauren Martich, VP of Development for the organization. “Ann has generously supported us and spay/neuter programs for over 30 years in the Valley. Her commitment to animals is inspiring.”

AHS says the initiative is intended to spark statewide action to address the root causes of pet homelessness before shelters reach even greater capacity. At just one year old, Charlotte is hoping all of her bad luck is out of the way now that she is in a safe space. The sweet Labrador Retriever mix was transferred to the Arizona Humane Society in February of this year after she was found as an injured stray and not ambulating very well.

Covered in abrasions and lame in her right hind leg, x-rays in the shelter’s Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital revealed she had a pelvic fracture – most likely the result of being hit by a car. In addition to being treated for this injury, Charlotte was given a dental and treated for a puppy cold while at the Arizona Humane Society and then subsequently in a loving Foster Hero home.

Now that she is all healed and full of energy, this sweet pup is known to be a complete goofball who loves to play, go on walks and explore. Charlotte is also a very smart and eager pup who is always ready to show off her tricks or learn more in exchange for yummy treats. While she is an absolute sweetheart to those she knows, this young pup will need a patient and loving family that understands she takes time to warm up to you while she is learning to trust others.

A great example of why the Arizona Humane Society works to provide resources to pet owners, Krillin was surrendered to the shelter earlier this month after his family unfortunately was no longer able to care for him. Along with multiple other pets and puppies, this is a great example of the importance of spaying and neutering pets to hep reduce the number of pets coming into local shelters.

Surprisingly, a few of Krillin’s littermates are more Sharpei looking while this adorable nine-week-old is more Husky or Shepherd looking. No matter if you have a sweet tooth or not, Skittles hopes you will be a fan of his bright and colorful personality! The one-year-old domestic shorthair tabby has been in the care of the Arizona Humane Society since early May and is in need of a loving Foster Hero home to continue recovering from a kitty cold.

Skittles is just one of almost 3,600 pets who have received care in a foster home this year alone ranging from tiny orphaned kittens to larger pets with orthopedic issues and everything in between. One of thousands of pets who are rescued from cruelty each year by the Arizona Humane Society, adorable Chewy found his way to the shelter in January of this year after he was rescued from inhumane treatment. While it is not known what head trauma he underwent, the adorable four-year-old American Pitbull Terrier has a unique marking on his face as a reminder of his neglectful past.
