The McDowell Mountain Music Festival aims to shed light on some of the most important aspects of life: children, community, culture, and charity. Eight years ago, John Largay of Wespac Construction, reggae rocker Walt Richardson, and Ron Colone had a vision to do exactly this through a music festival unlike any other in Arizona. They booked top national and international acts from around the world to partake in an event where all proceeds go to local charities that benefit our children’s education. The festival founders hoped to make the event a family friendly, charitable, and fun atmosphere for all ages and from any background.
Through the years, the scope and size of the MMMF have fluctuated with the economy, but the heart of the effort remains the same. We hope to gain the momentum we need to bring the festival back to the Westworld venue – a larger-scale event increases the donations to our beneficiaries. The experience of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival rivals that of other summer festivals across the nation, but with a limited budget the lineups are smaller than those of Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapolooza, etc.--the MMMF is all about quality over quantity. The founders have booked some amazing bands and artists throughout the last eight years including The Flaming Lips, The Black Crowes, Blues Traveler, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Hot Tuna, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Matisyahu, John Butler Trio, The Wailers, to name a few.
This year is no different. With Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero’s, Xavier Rudd, JJ Grey and Mofro, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Martin Sexton, and more! It is safe to say we are poised to have a blast on April 29 – May 1st, 2011 and to PARTY WITH A PURPOSE!
Come celebrate with us this year and see some awesome bands that have played other major festivals across the world, along with some local favorites, while helping the (2) local charities (Ear Candy and Phoenix Day) strive to meet their goals. We can make a difference by getting the community together in celebration while enjoying the music, sunshine and 2,000 of your closest friends! What an idea!
