Roller Derby is a trendy roller skating sport that’s catching on quickly here in Phoenix Arizona, as well as the rest of the country. Basically it’s a roller skating game called a bout, that’s in a skating rink consisting of two teams; each having one designated jammer, three designated blockers, and one pivot. The jammer is the one that scores for the team by passing up the members of the opposite team, and they wear a star cover on their helmet that is called a ‘panty’. The blockers must try and block the opposing jammer from passing their team members up, and can often be seen wearing plain helmets. These blockers may use body parts above their mid thigh to block other players, but they can not use their hands, heads, forearms, or elbows. The pivot is a blocker who may become a jammer later on in the bout, and usually wears a striped panty on their helmet. Roller Derby is usually viewed as a women’s only sport, but guys have leagues as well such as the Phoenix Rattleskates. There are different derby leagues in Arizona such as the Desert Dolls Roller DerbyArizona Roller Derby, Arizona Roller Girls, Harmonic Violence Roller GirlsHavasu Hitgirls, and the Arizona Derby Dames. You could easily become a player for teams such as The Pretty H8 Machines, Shotgun Shirleys, Cosmic Killas, Cherry Posse, The Bad News Beaters, Brawlarinas, Bruisers, Smash Squad, Surly Gurlies, Tent City Terrors, Bombshells, Brutal Beauties, Coffin Draggers, Runaway Brides, or the Schoolyard Scrappers. It’s a fun way to get into shape and to let off some steam. Any woman who can skate can participate, and perfectly ordinary ladies are joining all the time; so don’t be shy! A Phoenix Arizona league membership is forty dollars a month. You will also have to pay a yearly insurance fee through WFTDA which is between thirty five to fifty bucks a year.  For contact information, locations, game schedule, and to join, please select one of the above links to go to their site. Keep in mind that with some leagues you must try out for to be able to join, while Desert Dolls will accept anyone regardless of skill. You should first go check out one of their awesome bouts before considering to join. Check out their videos as well to get a taste of what you can potentially be doing with the Phoenix Arizona Roller Derby. Hope you can make it to one of the next bouts and that you seriously consider joining this exhilarating and exciting sport!

  2. This is a great article! And to tell you the trith it’s about time derby is looked at as forms of both fun and fitness, alike!! :0)

    In fairness though you left out the “Arizona Roller Girls” of Mesa which draws those who are interested from the East Valley Cities and “Harmonic Violence Roller Girls” of Phoenix who today won their first on the road, game against the “Havasu HitGirls” Also, the “Tent City Terrors” are a traveling team For Arizona Roller Derby and the original traveling team for the state of Arizona. And it is the “Bad News Beaters”…

    Also Roller Derby here in the Valley is more than just for women, there are at least 3 men’s leagues in the Valley and at least one in Tucson. There are also kids leagues that have formed including the “Phoenix Derby Brats” and “Tucson Derby Brats.” “Single Handed Roller Derby” is a co-ed league that combines the skating strength of body men and women!

    Theres fun and fitness for everyone….including to my understanding the newly formed “Arizona Derby Fit Club” which caters to mainly women and some men who are looking to skate in the derby mindset without dedicating to a singular league.

    All of the additional leagues and organizations I have mentioned have been accessible by me on Facebook! No matter who ya choose one thing youre definitely gonna find is camraderie and some new friends who are in the same predicaments as you!

    Again, GREAT ARTICLE!

  3. Derby is definitely not “Roller Derby is a women’s only sport”. There is a male only team right here in Phoenix, the Phoenix Rattleskates;
