Misty Hyman: Olympic Gold Medal Swimmer

Phoenix has its very own fly girl: Misty Hyman. An underdog at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the Phoenix-native took home gold. Her event: the 200-meter butterfly. Known for her innovative underwater dolphin kick, Misty is also making waves as a top-notch instructor and motivational speaker. You can even get a one-on-one with the swim coach at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain (it’s so worth it). Here she dishes on sleeping in and her ultimate fitness goal (it may surprise you)….

Name: Misty Dawn Hyman

I’m inspired by…

The beauty of nature and the kindness of friends.

The perfect day would be…

A morning swim (preferably in open water), followed by a delicious breakfast then time to sit somewhere beautiful to read next to my fiancé.

Favorite calorie-burner…

Hiking Camelback Mountain, Cholla Trail at sunrise.

My fridge is always stocked with…

Fruits, vegetables, and sparkling water to mix with all-natural fruit juice.

One thing I cannot live without…

My iPhone. I love that I can be anywhere in the world and still ‘take care of business.’

The one person who motivates me is…

My fiancé. He always encourages me to be the best “me” that I can be.

No sweat session is complete without…

Abs and stretching.

My motivation…

To always fulfill my own potential.

My stress relief…

Masters swim practice at Phoenix Swim Club.

The best medicine…

Sleeping in. I think it’s important to listen to your body and not just the alarm clock once in a while.

I’m listening to…

NPR News.

Best fitness/nutrition advice…

Moderation! Unless you are training for the Olympics, balance and moderation offer the best solution for long term sustainable results. Remember, Olympians don’t train like Olympians forever. When our lives are not measured in 100ths of seconds, we take a step back and have a fitness regime that works for our new priorities whether they be work, family, education, etc.

Best habit…

Smiling. I get told that I smile all the time. I don’t even realize it!

My fitness goal…

I do what I can to be healthy, feel good and look good, in that order.

My healthy haven…

Whole Foods. When I’m too tired or too busy to cook, Whole Foods always has a quick healthy delicious meal ready for me. I love the variety.

Secret to happiness…

Gratitude. I am so thankful for all of the gifts in my life. When I remember how blessed I am, it’s very difficult to be sad.

Always…

Look on the bright side.

Never…

Be mean to yourself.
