How is it that the holidays are already upon us? It feels like just yesterday that I was burning my hands on my steering wheel in the 114 degree Arizona-summer heat. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’ve scoped out some of the best home décor and table décor items—courtesy of Williams-Sonoma and Williams-Sonoma Home—that will set the festive mood for next week’s food-filled family gatherings.

It’s no secret that Thanksgiving revolves around the turkey, but some turkey decorations can be a bit cliché. However, this Decorative Straw Turkey from Williams-Sonoma is traditional while still being interesting, which will please all generations in attendance. Organizational Systems from Suite New York

I have a few friends and relatives who, when I walk into their homes, every book, paper and pen has its own perfect spot, and I am simply in awe of their organizational touch. Such a meticulous home almost makes me feel as if I have walked into an open house, rather than a simple dinner party or get together. I long to be this organized and on top of my clutter situation, but there just always seem to be those household items that never find their perfect home. After browsing many of Suite New York’s organizational systems, I think I may have found some perfect clutter solutions for various rooms in my home.

I absolutely love this 606 Organizational System, designed by Dieter Rams. This modular system can be finished in either anodized aluminum or painted white, and is comprised of hanging flat or inclined shelves along with upright elements, two or three drawer units, garment rods under the shelves and cabinets with flap-down or retractable doors. This seamless and functional shelving system has endless storage opportunities and would go perfectly in a large home office or living room. While books line the shelves in this photo, it would also look great to alternate with colorful candles and framed photos.

The big organizational issue in my home is all the excess paper items I can’t seem to find the right spot for: magazines, bills, To-Do lists, etc. These Finder Racks, designed by Xavier Lust, are the ideal way to store my miscellaneous documents and mags. They hang on the wall, so you don’t need to take up any extra space on the floor or kitchen counter, and are available in stainless steel or white lacquered. I love the stainless steel option, since it allows you to write notes directly on the rack with removable ink. The white lacquered versions are magnetic, making for easy installation.

Not only is this Horizontal Sliding Door Cabinet a work of art, but it’s also a practical shelving unit that would fit in seamlessly over or next to a flat-screen TV to house DVDs or other entertainment items. Designed by Shigeru Uchida, the storage unit mounts on the wall and offers the convenience of sliding metal doors that slide open in both directions. The units are finished in either natural oak or wenged oak with a protective wax finish, while the sliding metal doors are available in a variety of flossy or matte lacquers.

Local Realtor Rents Homes to Needy Families

About four to five years ago, the Phoenix real estate market was in full swing, and investors looking to make a profit came from all over to purchase properties—and local realtor with Scottsdale’s Signature Fine Homes, Rick Wandrych, did just that. The difference, however, is that the properties he purchased in the Downtown Phoenix area were not bought for his own personal gain. Instead, Wandrych purchased these houses to rent out to local families in need as affordable housing.

From 2005 to 2006, Wandrych purchased eight homes in the downtown area which he now rents out to needy Valley families, most of which have children who are enrolled in local schools and who are good students. One of the homes Wandrych bought is a historic property—built in 1910—and is on the national registrar of historic sites in Arizona. Another was almost to the point of being destroyed when Wandrych bought it, at the time being used as a flop house by prostitutes and addicts; now, the home is totally restored and renovated and it is being rented by a single parent who is supporting her daughter through college and a young family with young kids.

In order to find the families in which to rent his homes to, Wandrych goes through several local outlets—he contacts and works with local school leaders, works with two neighborhood churches, and he also goes through two local nonprofit organizations with which he has developed a good working relationships with. Each of these three outlets presents and nominates many families that they believe should have the opportunity of renting one of Wandrych’s homes. Then, Wandrych chooses the families who are in the most need of a good home, and he asks them what they can afford in terms of rent (which is typically very much below the going market rate for renting such a home). Once the finances are established, Wandrych assists the family in moving into their new home.

Even in this difficult economic time, as Wandrych’s business in real estate isn’t what is was a few years ago, he continues to give back to his community and rent out his homes to needy families. Since Wandrych started this unique service, many types of families who are in need of a little help for a variety of reason have rented from Wandrych, including those uprooting due to natural disasters, families relocating from different countries and families who have lost their homes entirely and didn’t have any place else to turn.

Studio Italia Design Bedside Table Lamps

Curling up with a good book before bed isn’t a luxury for me, it’s a necessity. And I admit, if the book I am reading is really intriguing, sometimes I’ll even hop into bed before the 9 p.m. mark just so that I can get a good couple hours of reading time in for that day. But, while I love a good book, what I really hate is a bad, bulky, too-dim-or-too-bright bedside table lamp. That’s why I got excited when I ran across these streamlined Studio Italia Design lamps—their sleek style and functional approach make these lighting fixtures just right for my pre-slumber reading needs.

Minimania

The first Studio Italia collection I have my eye on is the Minimania collection. Available in both wall-mounting and table-standing options, both styles in the Minimania collection consist of cylindrical shapes that rotate 360 degrees over its nickel or chrome metal frame. Available in technologically inspired metal or the more artistic blown glass, the Minimania collection is perfect for shining directly on a book at night, or is just as versatile for indirect lighting, due to its rotating feature.

The second Studio Italia collection that I really love is the ingenious Buonanotte. Designed by the creative Giulio Lacchetti for Studio Italia Design, this style is created as both a convenient book rest and a table lamp. The Buonanotte style—which means “good night” in Italian—has a metal frame fixture that is equipped with a sensor, which turns the light on when the book is taken off the lamp, and turns the light off when the book is rested back on the frame. A switch is installed below the metal frame and is activated through a hole in the frame, and the flip of this switch automatically turns the light on or off with the touch of a finger or book.

I’m quite picky about the books I lay out on my coffee table. They must have beautiful, eye-catching photography or art work as well as interesting information so that they can A) Easily entertain dinner guests while the meal is still being prepared, and B) Serve as a book you may pick up and read yourself on a lazyweekend afternoon. This brand new design book from famed interior design firm Yabu Pushelberg is the perfect coffee table book to pick up for yourself before the holiday season kicks into full gear, as well as an ideal gift to scoop up for that design junkie in your life.

The 220-page design book, entitled Yabu Pushelberg (easy enough to remember, right?), is the firm’s first book and was just released last month. The book features Yabu Pushelberg’s best work over the years, including the designs of retail, restaurant, hotel and residential interiors. (There is much of that to make note of, as the firm has designed spaces for such high-profile clientele as Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, St. Regis Hotels, Louis Vuitton, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co., Carolina Herrera, Lane Crawford and Jean Georges Von Richten, all of whose spaces can be seen in the book.) While Yabu Pushelberg offers stunningly large photography of such spaces, it’s not just a book to be looked at—you’ll also want to dive into the text, as it includes a handful of essays written by William Norwich, contributing editor of Vogue and former style & entertaining editor of the New York Time Magazine.

George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg started Yabu Pushelberg in 1980, and have been creating some of the most internationally celebrated interior spaces ever since. Gozzer Ranch Property Sales Promising

As the market gets into full-on recovery mode, it’s encouraging to see real estate developments surpassing sales expectations.
