Green Tucson

From carrying your own canvas shopping bags to choosing organic produce and energy-efficient light bulbs, being green sure has become trendy—and we mean that in a good way. Tucson is an especially earth-conscious city—the American Lung Association ranked Tucson as being the No. 6 city in the country for clean air in their “State of the Air: 2009” report. Here are a few green tidbits about Tucson venues and activities to expand your eco-I.Q.

Accommodations
The majority of Tucson’s premier resorts are taking measures to green up their businesses—and were not just talking about the simple towel reuse recommendations. Loews Ventana Canyon is an EPA-Energy Certified resort, utilizing low-flow toilets, energy-efficient light bulbs, Energy-star laundry appliances and many local and organically grown crops and meats in their restaurants. JW Marriott Starr Pass also prides itself on its 95 percent sustainable atmosphere, including their partnership with the Tohono O’odham Nation to offer organic, local produce to resort guests. Other increasingly green Tucson accommodations include the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa, Hotel Congress, the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort and many others.

Farmers’ Markets
Shopping the local farmers’ markets not only promotes neighborhood farming and a healthy earth, but it’s a fun way to spend a weekend morning or afternoon too. With Tucson’s fantastic weather, you can make a habit of stocking up on local produce weekly throughout the year. Tucson has some great farmers’ markets including the Santa Cruz River Farmers’ Market, which won a spot as one of “America’s Top 10 Famers’ Markets” in Eating Well Magazine; the Civano Farmers’ and Artisans Market located at the Civano Nursery; the Green Valley Village Farmers’ Market offered on Wednesdays; the Tucson Farmers’ Market at St. Philip’s Plaza; and even the University of Arizona Farmers’ Market, offered on Fridays. For example, the Tucson Botanical Gardens is an earth-lovers’ paradise with its preserved garden paths, nature trails and eco-friendly practices like gray water irrigation and rainwater harvesting. In addition, Reid Park Zoo—always a kid favorite—now includes a LEED Platinum Certified 10,000 sq.-ft. Conservation Learning Center. www.tucsonzoo.org, www.tucsonbotanical.org.

Shopping
Westcor, the owner of upscale shopping destination La Encantada, has taken measures to be more eco-friendly—they have implemented a comprehensive, five-year sustainability plan and are currently working toward conserving resources at each of their shopping centers throughout Tucson and the Phoenix area. In addition, Tucson houses numerous independently owned boutiques and shops that offer organic, green fashions. One of which is Toque de Pasion, featuring organic and fair trade clothing and fashions from all over the world, in particular South America. www.westcor.com; www.toquedepasion.net.

Exercise
In addition to the numerous businesses and buildings that are working toward a higher green standard, still the most earth-friendly venue out there is Mother Nature. Rather than visiting your local gym, switch up your exercise routine and take advantage of Tucson’s great weather and outdoor exercise opportunities. Hike your way up Sabino Canyon or ride your bike through the trails of the Rincon Mountain. If you’re feeling extra gutsy, there are various guides to consult for a rock climbing adventure. Not quire ready for the real deal?
