The Met Gala is where fashion meets the red carpet, and then kind of explodes. Celebs from every industry: art, music, fashion, and film carefully put together looks that they hope will wow the barrage of photogs waiting for them at the bottom of that red staircase, but most importantly they are hoping to get the approval of the woman of the hour, Anna Wintour.
This year’s Gala celebrates the opening of The Met’s spring 2013 Costume Institute exhibition, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, which will examine punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the early 1970s through its continuing influence today. Featuring approximately one hundred designs for men and women, the exhibition will include original punk garments and recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear borrow punk’s visual symbols.
With this kind of inspiration it is little surprise that we have plenty to talk about in the way of fashion in the aftermath of the Punk Party.
Anna Wintour showed up with out a single hair out of place, as is her M.O., in a pretty floral Chanel dress.
Dakota Fanning looks broody and age appropriate (not to mention punk appropriate) in her black Rodarte dress with sheer panels.
Anne Hathaway rocked a 90s Valentino gown and a new do.
SJP’s Giles Deacon gown wins for “wow factor,” but it was certainly the custom tartan thigh hugging Louboutin boots and Phillip Treacy Mohawk that pulled the whole look together.
