Apple introduced itself to the fashion industry with the release of its high-end smartwatch, Apple Watch, amid a mixed crowd of tech geeks, celebs and fashion editors.
Stars like Gwen Stefani, Dr. Dre and basketball player Kevin Durant sat side-by-side with style setters from Vogue, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan at the event in Cupertino Tuesday.
Starting at $349, the Apple Watch comes in either 38 mm or 42 mm and is available in stainless steel (Standard), aluminum (Sports) or solid 18 karat gold (Edition). Straps are interchangeable and come in leather, stainless steel and a bunch of different color combinations for personal customization.
“What the Swiss did was marry quality and craftsmanship with precision time-telling. If we’re looking for those qualities in the digital era, that’s what the Apple watch is about,” Joe Zee, editor in chief of Yahoo Style, told The Cut. “I didn’t think I was going to wear it pre-announcement, and now, absolutely, I like the practicality of it. I’m also a tech geek at heart, so for that reason alone, I would wear it.”
Though some among the fashion set were impressed, others were not.
“It’s kind of dorky,” said model and TV host Alexa Chung, while designer Todd Snyder said that he “would never replace my Rolex for that watch.”
Besides aesthetic, the watch will be, first and foremost, techy. Apple Watch wearers can access all of their favorite iPhone apps and can even connect a credit card to pay for items through the watch using Apple Pay.
