AFM joined some of the industry’s most talented up-and-coming fashion and jewelry designers for a night of shopping for a cause at Barneys New York, Scottsdale Fashion Square.
Hosted by Barneys New York Creative Ambassador-at-Large, Simon Doonan, and Renee Parsons, the private cocktail party supported Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona, a local nonprofit dedicated to bringing therapeutic art to abused, neglected and at-risk children and their families.
Designers in attendance included 2013 CFDA Fashion Fund Winner Juan Carlos Oblando, who showcased his new collection at the event; jewelry designer Sara Weinstock, known for her delicate, nature-inspired pieces; and jewelry designer Judy Geib with her beautiful handcrafted pieces that feature gorgeous gemstones.
Style Files caught up with Barney’s Simon Doonan and designer Sara Weinstock to find out what’s hot for fall and what you can expect next from Sara.
AFM: In your opinion, what key fall pieces should women and men have in their wardrobes?
Simon Doonan: Every women needs a biker jacket. You can wear it with an lbd or with jeans. It’s versatile. Who does not want to look a bit tough every now and then. Every girl needs a good ankle boot and a great Van-style shoe. A bag? I am loving Delvaux.
AFM:Please tell us your thoughts about these three featured designers. Why are they ones to watch?
SD: If I was an A-lister who was headed for the red-carpet I would only wear Juan Carlos Obando. It’s updated Hollywood glamour. Sara Weinstock and Judy Geib elevate the craft of jewelry design to a galactic level of fabulosity. Ok so I am exaggerating…but only a little bit.
AFM: How are these designers making an impact?
SD: These three creators and pushing fashion forward with integrity and glamour and great design. I am a big fan.
AFM: What is your design aesthetic?
Sara Weinstock: It comes from a place of emotions. I feel what I design, I am influenced by everything around me, whether it be textiles, architecture, color, movement, the way the wind blows a tree, all my senses are awake and vital to my design aesthetic.
AFM: Please describe your current collection for Barneys New York –
SW: We have our best collection ever in Barneys. It is delicate, feminine, strong, beautiful, precious, balanced and made with the utmost of detail and quality. It is a natural evolution from where I started 7 years ago and the woman I am today.
AFM: What can we look forward to from you in the future?
SW: More evolution and hunger to stay moving forward in a positive direction.
