Black History Month is a time to reflect on the achievements of Black entrepreneurs and creatives in our community. One such powerhouse is Afiniki “Afi” Like Taffy, a Nigerian-born, London-raised stylist and wardrobe consultant who has made her mark in Scottsdale. Through styling expertise, Afi teaches clients to embrace confidence and self-expression in their wardrobe choices.
Afi’s passion began early and was heavily influenced by her father, a well-known figure in the West African fashion scene.
“My dad in Africa is a fashion icon,” she said. “He’s known for his customized suiting. He would take me to ateliers, both in London and in Africa. I was able to look at the fabrics and the designs. Seeing how regal he looked and how confident he felt in his custom suits shaped everything for me.”
From those formative experiences, Afi developed a keen eye for styling, recognizing the transformative power of clothing early on. Today, she works with clients to help them curate wardrobes that reflect their highest selves.
“I love to give my clients little nudges of love because it’s always good to step out of your comfort zone,” she said. “When you have confidence, I believe you can do anything you set your mind to.”
As a Black business owner, Afi recognizes Black History Month’s significance and representation’s importance in the fashion industry.
“Having lived here for almost 17 years, it’s so important for Black history and Black businesses to be highlighted this time of year,” she said. “Unfortunately, we are often overlooked because of society and history, so I love that this month shines a light on our contributions.”
She also noted the connection between Black History Month and February’s theme of love, adding, “It is just such a beautiful thing.”
Her advice to aspiring fashion professionals is simple yet profound: “Just start somewhere. Whether styling your friends, working in a boutique, or interning, every step is a learning experience. Stay true to your vision, and don’t be afraid to take risks.”
Through her business, she continues to uplift others, proving that style is more than just clothing; it’s a vehicle for confidence, identity, and empowerment. For more on Afi’s work and styling services, visit afiliketaffy.com or follow her on social media at @afiliketaffy.
