2023 Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V has been redesigned for 2023. This five-seat subcompact SUV boasts more standard safety features, a better multimedia experience and an all-wheel drive option. Perched atop the Honda Civic platform, Its ride feels much more comfortable and refined. The cabin is roomy with good visibility and controls are thoughtfully organized and straightforward to operate.

Though the engine is larger and more powerful than before, a 2.0L I4 making a mere 158 hp can only be expected to do so much. With the larger size and weight of the Honda HR-V, decent acceleration remains an elusive pipe-dream. The most obvious solution would be a turbocharged option to pump up the power. Or a gas/electric hybrid system. Here’s hoping Honda can remedy this in the near future.

Until then though, we’ll have to be content with the addition of a Snow mode and hill-start assist as standard equipment. There’s an impressive amount of space in the back. The top of the line EX-L trim adds leather trimmings, heated seats and plenty of other niceties. All without breaking the bank. The multimedia system is refreshingly easy to use. Among the most intuitive we’ve tested. Free from the constraints of an overly sensitive touch pad. Opting instead for large dials and  physical controls. There’s also some pretty clever storage compartments for smaller items that have been thoughtfully designed into the cabin. From underfloor bins in the cargo bay, to a new pass-through area in the front center console for electronics, keys, wallets, etc.

On the whole, the redesigned 2023 Honda HR-V hits several marks, while missing several more. We are excited for more safety features and driving aides. Along with a better ride, thanks to the Civic base. A roomy back seat, an easy-to-use multimedia system and smart storage compartments. But we would love to see a more powerful engine with maybe an EV, or at least a hybrid option for the U.S. This would resolve both the lackluster fuel economy and acceleration. It may be better than before, but it has a ways to go still.

Price as tested: $30,590.00
