It’s been 50 years since the Porsche 911 made its debut at at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany. Since then, 820,000 Porsche 911s have been built, making it the most successful sports car in the world.

In honor of its half-century milestone, Porsche will release a limited edition 911, on September 12, to coincide with the 2013 show. Like the original, the 911 50th Anniversary Edition features a flat-six rear engine and rear-wheel drive; it will sport the wide body style normally reserved for the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 models, and comes equipped with a power kit to increase engine performance to 430 horsepower, with a top speed of 185 miles per hour. Production on the anniversary edition will be limited to 1963, the year the 911 made its world premiere, and will arrive in dealers following the show with a sticker price of $125,050, including destination charges.

In addition to the special-edition vehicle, through September 29, 2013, the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, will present an extraordinary retrospective on the history of the 911. More than 40 different versions of the car, extending from the original 911 up to the present day, including rare production cars, race cars and prototypes, will be presented to the general public, some for the first time.
