The Lexus UX 250h F Sport is a brand new model for 2019. The ‘h’ is of course for hybrid, and the F Sport means this little Lexus received a sporty makeover. Total system power output from the 2.0L four-cylinder engine and electric motors is 181 hp. That’s 12 hp up from the standard UX version. As a result, the hybrid UX model, strangely enough, is the sportier model to drive. With tight dimensions and compact proportions, it’s highly maneuverable and fun to joyride around town in.
The interior follows the time tested Lexus formula of combining style, taste and a smart layout. The infotainment display is large at 7 inches, but the software continues to be a low point for Lexus, with touchscreen and trackpad operation that is cumbersome to use. A simple dial control would be faster and feel more precise. Attempts to cut costs on this entry-level luxury small SUV are evident with some use of plastics and lower quality interior materials. More expected in a Toyota than a Lexus. Implementation is very good though, reaching an estimable level of refinement. Due to its small size, the backseat offers limited legroom. This goes down to almost zero legroom when the front two seats are scooted all the way back.
Ride quality is on the stiffer side thanks to the sportier suspension of the F Sport package. Benefits are less body roll and great vehicle control in the twists and turns though. Other F Sport specific goodies include attractive wheels, custom front and rear bumper, F Sport grille insert, LED fog lights, sport seats and a sporty shift knob. You’ll also get a generous smattering of aluminum pieces from pedals to scuff plates.
Plenty of safety features and driving aides can be found thanks to the Lexus Safety System Plus. These systems work well, helping to detect pedestrians and other road hazards, hold the lane, maintain vehicle distances, automatically switch on high beams and more.
These days, it would seem that the Lexus line has a size and shape for every possible consumer. From the already compact NX, growing in size and price to the popular RX, GX and LX. Now, with the new UX making its debut as the smallest of the group, I think we’ve seen every size SUV we can from Lexus. The UX brings descent performance, utility and tidy proportions more suited for city life than serious off-road adventures. With 39 mpg, a sharp, sporty design, nice interior and generous tech on board for the price, the Lexus UX just might be the perfect fit for you.
