When it comes to decorating a home, there’s no one design style that fits all. Thankfully, the interior design world offers multiple styles and trends that individuals can draw inspiration from and incorporate into their living spaces, so that every home is unique to the homeowner’s personality and preferences.
That being said, new interior design trends are constantly emerging and fading at a rapid pace, making it difficult to navigate the vast array of design options and stay updated on the latest styles. Plus, trends can vary regionally, too, with specific interior design styles being more popular in certain cities and states than others.
To help individuals better understand the regional trends of interior design, Architectural Digest mined Google Trends data to determine the top interior design style by state and city, as well as the most popular design aesthetic nationwide.
The study found that Industrial is the most popular interior design style across the U.S. In 2018, it was the most popular interior design trend in just five states, but it is now the top-searched style in 11 states, including Texas, Georgia and multiple Midwestern states.
While the industrial aesthetic is sweeping across the U.S., the Maximalist style is the most popular design trend in Arizona, as well as the second-most popular trend nationwide. Characterized by bold colors, patterns and an abundance of decorative elements, the Maximalist aesthetic creates an opulent and vibrant space.
Other notable states where Maximalist is the top-searched interior design style include California, New York, Tennessee and Massachusetts. According to the study, Maximalism is highly searched among many of the biggest cities, including Phoenix, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
Following Maximalism, French Country is the next most popular design trend in the U.S., primarily common in Arkansas, Connecticut, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina and Virginia. For fourth place nationwide is the Cottagecore trend, which earned a three-way tie between Maximalist and Shabby Chic in the Northeast. Shabby Chic rounds up the top five interior design styles in the U.S. with a large presence in Florida, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Kentucky and Delaware.
