Everyone knows about Black Friday, the Friday following Thanksgiving that is one of the biggest shopping days of the year for the holiday season. However, something that a lot of people don’t know is that the Saturday after Black Friday is something called Small Business Saturday. This shopping event was launched in 2010 by American Express, and was meant to encourage people around the country to support small, local businesses to keep money in their local economies. In 2011, the U.S. Senate officially recognized the day, and in 2012 elected officials in all 50 states championed the shopping event. Small Business Saturday has continued to grow over the last five years, and in 2015, 95 million people shopped at small businesses on the day, according to the American Express event page.
Because shopping local is so important, here are some amazing home décor stops that you should be sure to check out for this year’s Small Business Saturday on November 26, 2016.
Frances Vintage is a boutique in midtown Phoenix that opened in 2006. The owner, Georganne Bryant, works with other local businesses to enrich the Phoenix community. Bryant also holds an award-winning craft fair called “Frances Crafeteria” every First Friday in December, showcasing hundreds of Arizona crafters and artists. Don’t miss shopping the unique clothing, jewelry, paper goods and homemade gifts at Frances Vintage this Small Business Saturday.
The new MoonAge popup shop in DeSoto Central Market is another can’t-miss stop for Small Business Saturday. The local boutique features handmade jewelry by the owners Tyler Greene and Kelli Van, as well as hand poured and blended, luxury soy candles, and greeting cards.
Phoenix Flea embodies all that is important about shopping local. The modern market features tons of different types of pieces at their spring and fall events such as vintage, fine art, handcrafted, fashion, artisan food and more. Phoenix Flea also holds pop-up markets, special events and community nights throughout the year; they are even opening their own permanent pop-up shop at DeSoto Central Market this month, as MoonAge did as well. Their fall market takes place on Small Business Saturday, November 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Heritage Square in downtown Phoenix.
Adelaide Boutique is a family-owned and operated shop that features local artists. The Chandler boutique carries fashion, jewelry, home décor, seasonal pieces, gifts and even a consignment section. Adelaide Boutique also now shares a home with the chic clothing store, Clothes Minded, so this is really a one-stop-shop for all things local, and definitely should be on your Small Business Saturday schedule.
