Q & A: Tim Larson of La Casa Builders Inc.

Let us introduce you to the Valley’s top design and build professionals. Today, let’s get to know Tim Larson of La Casa Builders Inc. and find out about the current project he is renovating that has quite the interesting history.

Instagram, Twitter and Facebook handles: Facebook is La Casa Builders.

How did you get started in the design/build industry? I went to East Grand Forks Technical College to be a general contractor and had my own general contracting business at age 21. I did my own carpentry work and when I moved to Arizona in 1985, I started  a finish carpentry business and, in 1991, I started La Casa Builders as a general contracting business.

What is your favorite project in Arizona? It’s a project I am currently on. I am the general contractor for the renovation of the David Wright House. This home was built in 1952  and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his son David and his wife, Gladys. This is the second Frank Lloyd House I have renovated. I did the renovation of the Lykes Residence (pictured, below), which was the last home Frank Lloyd Wright designed before he died. Both homes are in Phoenix.

What inspires you and your work? The challenges and creativity of the business. Problem solving. Every day is a new day. The people we work for.

What is something timeless every home should have? A lot of LED can lighting. Clean lines in the design. Less is more.

What is considered trendy in homes at this time? USB charging areas and outlets, curbless showers, Quartz countertops. LED lighting  with smart home technology.

What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment? Keeping La Casa Builders going with 10 employees after the crash of 2008. I currently have 15 employees.

What advice do you have for young people or students hoping to pursue a design/build career? It’s a very rewarding but it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of hours. You won’t be working 40 hour weeks.
