How did you get started in the design/build industry?

In 1978, I started my own home-building company selling homes for $35,500. This was after many years working with my father, Gene Hancock and Cavalier Homes, earning $1 per hour cutting my teeth on the art and business of home-building.

What is your favorite project in Arizona?

The master planned community of Sundance is my favorite project, if I may say so. It’s our largest community so far and was built in the City of Buckeye. Over a four-year period, we contributed 7,000 affordable homes for people of all ages, along with neighborhood parks and playgrounds for a balanced quality of life.

What inspires you and your work?

Driving through communities that we built 25 to 30 years ago and seeing people enjoying their home makes me feel proud.

What is something timeless every home should have?

Besides people living in them, I would have to say a backyard is a home’s most important feature. A piece of land you can call your own. That’s why in our new luxury rental home model, we include a small backyard with a patio and grassy turf area for each resident.

What is considered trendy in homes at this time?

Technology, the wireless speakers, doorbell cameras, light controls, remote thermostat, all controlled by mobile applications for the convenience of the resident on the go. We now include this state-of-the-art technology usually only available to homebuyers in all or our rental homes, and they have become in high demand with residents of all ages.

What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment?

Forty-two years of longevity in the home-building business in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

What advice do you have for young people or students hoping to pursue a design/build career?

Seek out the best to work for and listen and learn. My dad always told me: hire the very best, pay them very well, treat them with dignity and respect and get out of their way.

What are you working on now?

Nineteen single-level, luxury rental home communities, designed to resemble single-family homes. This has me really busy right now and fills a void in our community as more people look to break the mold on the traditional home-buying model.
