Recently, I got an email from a concerned business: Harrison, I own a small tile company. Recently we have had to restructure and cut back some incentives. I could tell that the front office staff was not happy. Then I got an email saying “WE NEED TO TALK.” How do I handle this? I know this will turn bad if I don’t stop it now. What do I do? - Mike Mike, this is a tough time. I can’t promise this meeting is going to be easy, but it will be productive if you can exercise emotional intelligence. Take the meeting and follow these steps: •Self-Awareness: Take a breath, recognize the emotional triggers that illicit a response. •Self-Management: Don’t respond immediately and keep your emotional outputs in check. •Social Awareness: Practice active listening, noticing their social cues to meter emotional connections. •Social Management: Compile the info and respond appropriately to the situation, even if that means just acknowledging you heard their complaints. These steps empower you to make the right decisions with your employees. When it comes to this situation, don’t get mad, just take notes and listen. I have been in this situation and I have found the best action is to close my mouth and listen. If you want to learn more, check out my book, Falling Forward: The Secrets To Successful Leadership. Sept Issue.indd 818/27/19 2:57 PM82 AZFOOTHILLS.COM LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN BY MELISSA LARSEN After much anticipation, 90-acre Seven Desert Mountain is now open with a fresh course, a killer clubhouse and up to 190 new places to call home. With even just a quick glance at all the goodness this fresh community has to offer, it is easy to see why its members are in seventh heaven. But of Course No. 7, which serves as the focal point of Seven, was designed by Bill Brownlee and Wendell Pickett and clocks in at 3,114 yards. The 18-hole, par-54 championship course is designed to embrace the fun, social side of the sport for all ages and skill levels. No. 7 introduces a new concept of an alternative teeing bunker on each hole, known as the “Sandy,” which allows golfers to play 18 holes teeing off from a bunker. This enables players to practice their short-game approach shots from the sand—or just have some fun on course. Plus, from the front tees, golfers can play 14 of the 18 holes with a putter; the average golfer can play all 18 holes with two or three clubs, offering a unique golfing experience. Visually speaking, No. 7 resembles a dreamlike desert parkland, with a babbling stream running through. The course is so lovely, in fact, that many golfers choose to walk the course to take in the beauty that surrounds instead of whizzing past it on a cart. No. 7’s good looks can even been enjoyed from the outdoor dining area that overlooks the 18th hole and the putting course. Join the Club Go for the golf; stay for Seven Desert Mountain community’s new clubhouse. “Homeowners at Seven will become members of Desert Mountain Club as part of their property purchase, gaining access to a suite of world-class private club amenities," says Desert Mountain Club CEO Damon DiOrio. Designed by Scottsdale’s Drewett Works, the clubhouse is easily walkable from the homes in the neighborhood and marks the ideal destination for around-the- clock amusement. First of all, the clubhouse is stunning—but far from snooty—with Sept Issue.indd 828/27/19 2:57 PM @azfoothills #azfoothills 83 TO LEARN MORE SEVEN DESERT MOUNTAIN DESERTMOUNTAIN.COM/SEVEN. The venue is casual and approachable, with an indoor-outdoor gastropub, two bocce ball courts and five fire pits, all of which will allow for hours of quality time off the course. There is even a private alfresco dining area for member use. “Seven seemed like the perfect fit for us since it was a new, contemporary/ modern community; plus we had decided to downsize and still wanted to be in Desert Mountain,” says Cindy and Ernie Payne, who were the first homeowners in Seven Desert Mountain and Desert Mountain Club members since 1999. “We love the new restaurant; it seems alive, young and trendy. We also love the golf course. It lets you know real quick what [you] need to work on to become better golfers. The short game is key.” Movin' On Up In addition to the course and clubhouse, three distinguished builders—Cullum Homes, Family Development and Camelot Homes—have made moving to Seven Desert Mountain thoroughly desirable, offering a range of villas, homes and luxury stacked- flat condominiums. "Seven Desert Mountain not only offers a variety of unique living opportunities, these modern and luxurious residences will offer breathtaking views of greater Phoenix and surrounding mountains and valley," says DiOrio. Cullum Homes is now selling its collection of luxury lifestyle residences. Homes at the Village at Seven Desert Mountain offer four distinctive base floor plans from 3,304 to 4,228 square feet and allow for customization to more than 9,000 square feet on certain home sites (there are 33 home sites in total, many of which with golf course or mountain views). To get a true taste of what’s in store at the Village at Seven Desert Mountain, Cullum Homes’ spectacular 9,300-sq.-ft. model home is slated for completion in Spring 2020. It will spotlight the “19th Hole” basement entertainment zone with an indoor golf simulator, glass-enclosed collector car showroom, a theater, a wet bar and other amenities; a casita; a three-car garage with a “car elevator”; and more. Home prices start at $1,995,000 prior to customization of the home and lot selection. Family Development is currently taking reservations at The Retreat at Seven Desert Mountain, a collection of 45 luxurious, low-maintenance, stacked-flat condominiums that are mere steps from the new Seven clubhouse. Homes within The Retreat range in size from 2,414 to 2,716 square feet, each with a private patio, a gourmet kitchen, a large great room and views onto the No. 7 golf course as well as long-range mountain and valley views. The five-unit condominium buildings within the Family Development project feature three different designs with two of the units on the ground floor and three units on the second level with access from the owner’s private elevator. All homes also offer a lavish Owner's Suite; a spacious Junior Suite for guests; a third room that can function as a den, a media room or an additional bedroom; and an attached 2.5- car garage. Construction of the models just kicked off, with completion set for Spring Sept Issue.indd 848/27/19 2:57 PM @azfoothills #azfoothills 85 2020. Home prices are projected to start from $1.3 million. Camelot Homes is now selling The Villas, deluxe lock-and-leave single-family homes with floor plans from 2,600 to 4,500 square feet and two to four bedrooms. The Villas offer residents a cool, contemporary style with a great room, a three-car garage, guest suites, soaring ceilings and jaw- dropping panoramic views. One- and two-story plans are available at The Villas, with elevators included in the latter. Forty- nine home sites are featured within the Camelot Homes project, with a whopping 46 of them located on No. 7 golf course. Model homes are slated for completion this month. Home prices start at $1,550,000 prior to customization of the home and lot selection.
