AS THE PHOENICIAN SPA DIRECTOR, it is my passion to bring the heart of hospitality to our guests, sharing the amazing offerings not only of our AAA Five- Diamond resort, but our community as well. The Valley of the Sun—my home for nearly 40 years—is truly a special place, providing unique experiences and opportunities that are both memorable and inspiring. For me personally, the ideal Arizona day begins at Metta Yoga. The 9 a.m. Yin & Yang class with teacher/owner Zuzana Kolinkova is a must, providing the best combination of restorative and active-flow poses. Its healing and invigorating nature “awakens” me to the day’s possibilities. From there, it’s a stop at Kaleidoscope Juice for an organic protein shake. My go-to is the Immortal Machine. This superfood-packed smoothie gives me added and sustainable energy and, best of all, it tastes like an oatmeal cookie. Of course, what ideal day would be complete without some retail therapy? Nordstrom at Scottsdale Fashion Square makes shoe shopping a hobby! For an afternoon of me-time, it is no surprise that my choice is The Phoenician Spa, a three-story facility that just debuted last year. The signature Himalayan Salt Stone Ritual massage gets deep into the muscles to help you relax, while at the same time the salt stones absorb into the skin to revitalize. Afterwards, a light lunch of citrus and arugula salad and a Pacific shrimp kabob at the rooftop pool adds to the pampering experience. To prepare for a special evening, I like to treat myself to a blow out at The Phoenician Spa’s Drybar. The full and wavy Cosmo style lasts for a few days, which is great for when it’s time to return to work. However, my ideal day is not over yet! Dinner at Postino WineCafé with my husband makes for an exceptional ending. The open-air design of the restaurant is so soothing and inviting. Plus, it offers our favorites: wine and bread (although technically, it is phenomenal bruschetta). Well now, I think I need to schedule my ideal day. I hope to see you along the way! Sheryl McCormick SPA DIRECTOR, THE PHOENICIAN Fall Society.indd 208/15/19 3:27 PMHello & Welcome! Your Employees Want to Have that Talk. How Do You Hear Their Complaints and React Positively? Recently, I got an email from a concerned business: Harrison, I own a small tile company. Recently we have had to restructure and cut back some incentives. I could tell that the front office staff was not happy. Then I got an email saying “WE NEED TO TALK.” How do I handle this? I know this will turn bad if I don’t stop it now. What do I do? - Mike Mike, this is a tough time. I can’t promise this meeting is going to be easy, but it will be productive if you can exercise emotional intelligence. Take the meeting and follow these steps: •Self-Awareness: Take a breath, recognize the emotional triggers that illicit a response. •Self-Management: Don’t respond immediately and keep your emotional outputs in check. •Social Awareness: Practice active listening, noticing their social cues to meter emotional connections. •Social Management: Compile the info and respond appropriately to the situation, even if that means just acknowledging you heard their complaints. These steps empower you to make the right decisions with your employees. When it comes to this situation, don’t get mad, just take notes and listen. I have been in this situation and I have found the best action is to close my mouth and listen. If you want to learn more, check out my book, Falling Forward: The Secrets To Successful Leadership.
