< PreviousIn 1967, few would have guessed that the “Fiesta de los Auto Elegantes”—a car show and parade put on by Russ Jackson and Tom Barrett and their families to raise money for the Scottsdale art center and library—would eventually grow into the world’s greatest collector car auctions. The first Barrett-Jackson auction took place in 1971 and included 75 cars from Barrett’s and Jackson’s collections. Now, more than 50 years later, the premier car auction and automotive lifestyle event draws over 300,000 people from around the globe to WestWorld of Scottsdale, where car collectors and enthusiasts gather each year to experience the pinnacle of Arizona’s car culture. Whether raising funds for charity or bringing show-stopping cars to the auction block, Barrett- Jackson knows how to deliver an unforgettable experience. Memorable moments are made during every Barrett-Jackson Auction, and here are five of our favorites from the last 50 years: 1997: Barrett-Jackson became the first collector car auction on live TV The auction has been televised ever since. It all began when Barrett-Jackson Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson took the reins of the company with a vision to bring the incredible world of collector cars into the living rooms of homes across America through live national television coverage. “We pulled phenomenal ratings,” Jackson recalls. “It was groundbreaking and changed the world of car collecting forever. It brought new blood into the hobby; we put this on television and it just kicked the doors down.” Today, the auction can be viewed live on The History Channel and FYI through Barrett-Jackson’s partnership with A+E Networks. 2013: The Batmobile goes to the block at Barrett-Jackson The original TV Batmobile shattered expectations and broke records, becoming the second highest- selling vehicle ever at a Barrett-Jackson auction, just behind Carroll Shelby’s personal 1966 Cobra 427 Super Snake. The Batmobile sold for $4.62 million and set a new world record for the highest price ever achieved by a TV/movie car. 2015: Ron Pratte sells his entire collection at Barrett Jackson, totaling $40.44 million Arguably the most significant collection ever offered in Barrett-Jackson’s history at the time, the Ron Pratte Collection featured over 140 collector cars, trucks and motorcycles, including the 1950 General Motors Futurliner Parade of Progress Tour Bus, the 1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special Motorama Concept Car and the one and only 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake, rightfully billed as the “Cobra to End All Cobras.” 2016: Barrett-Jackson history was made when a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am used to promote the film “ Smokey and The Bandit” roared onto the block to the iconic “East Bound and Down” song, accompanied by the film’s star, Burt Reynolds The car sold for a world-record $550,000; which was helped, undoubtedly, by Reynold’s appearance at the auction. 2018: Barrett-Jackson celebrated raising over $100 million for charity President George W. Bush and Jay Leno were on hand for the sale of a 2018 Corvette Carbon 65 Edition, which sold for $1.4 million, while Chad McQueen was on stage as the VIN 001 Ford Mustang Bullitt came to the block. In all, 10 vehicles were auctioned for worthy causes at the Scottsdale event that year, but it was the first current- generation Ford GT, which sold for $2.55 million, that pushed Barrett-Jackson over the $100 million mark in funds raised for worthy causes since 1971. Through 2022, Barrett-Jackson has raised more than $149 million and expects to surpass the $150- million milestone in Scottsdale in 2023. It will be exciting to see what the next 50 years brings for Arizona’s illustrious collector car auction. n Chari car with Pitbull, 2022 202 3 EDITION 40 INARIZ ONA 50 Years of Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale BY STEPHANIE PERRAULT HISTORY , C OUR TES Y OF BARRET T-J A CKSONCarroll Shelby’s 1966 Cobra 427 Super Snake, 2013 1950 General Motors Futurliner Parade of Progress Tour Bus, 2015 Ron Pra e Collection, 2015 Live TV interview, 1997Craig Jackson and Burt Reynolds The Ford GT that helped Barre -Jackson raise over $100 million for chari , 2018 INARIZ ONA 41 202 3 EDITION Barrett-Jackson , C OUR TES Y OF BARRET T-J A CKSON202 3 EDITION 42 INARIZ ONA A unique event like the Barrett-Jackson car show requires playing up and having fun with your style. WM Phoenix Open , CO U R T E S Y O F W M P H O E N IX O P E NR eavie grew up in the Valley, attending Dobson High School in Mesa before playing college golf at Arizona State University. At 19 years old, Reavie became a U.S. Public Links champion, which brought an invitation to The Masters Tournament. He also qualified for the 2003 U.S. Open before turning pro in 2004. Most recently, Reavie became the first player in his 40s to win on the PGA TOUR at the Barracuda Championship in 2022—his third PGA TOUR title after winning the 2019 Travelers Championship and the 2008 RBC Canadian Open. We spoke with the Scottsdale-based pro golfer to hear what he’s looking forward to at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open, how he’s seen the tournament evolve over the years and what he enjoys doing off the course. AZF: What is your history with the Phoenix Open? CR: As a kid through high school, I would carry the sign boards as a standard-bearer at the Phoenix Open for all the different groups, keeping score for all the guys playing golf. As long as my grades were good enough, I could skip school on Thursday to help out during Open week. In 2006, I received a sponsor exemption to play my first Phoenix Open. I played that same year and have participated in the Phoenix Open every year since. In between then, I also received my PGA TOUR card in 2008. AZF: What’s the best part about playing at the Phoenix Open? How is it different from other tournaments? CR: Playing in front of all my friends and family growing up here and all the ASU and UA fans. I grew up going to the Open; it’s a spotlight tournament for me to be able to play in it. AZF: How has the Phoenix Open changed over the years? CR: There are so many more people. Especially with Phoenix hosting the Super Bowl in 2023, it’s a very exciting, high-energy atmosphere that carries through the entire week. Some tournaments ebb and flow, but the Phoenix Open seems to have high energy and fun every day. AZF: How are you approaching the TPC Scottsdale course and this upcoming tournament? CR: My first few years on tour I didn’t have a lot of success there; I was trying too hard to play well. As I’ve gotten older, I just go play. They [the fans] are all rooting for you whether you play well or play badly. AZF: Thoughts on the infamous 16th hole? CR: I embrace it. I love having a lot of people out there cheering or booing, it doesn’t matter. Everybody’s fair game at the 16th hole, even if you’re a local player. AZF: When you’re not hitting the green, what are your favorite spots in the Valley? CR: I enjoy going to Diamondbacks games. I’ve been lucky enough to partner with them for the last few years as I wear a Diamondbacks logo on the side of my hat when I play golf. I also enjoy watching ASU football; really, just rooting on all the Arizona home teams. n Stay up to date with Chez on Instagram @chezreavie 202 3 EDITION 48 INARIZ ONA Ace Player: Chez Reavie BY CHRISTINA SILVESTRI INTERVIEW Hot on the heels of winning his third PGA TOUR title, Chez Reavie knows a thing or two about golf, especially in Arizona.
