It’s a birthday I’ll never forget. I had found the lump myself and knew I had cancer before a doctor ever confirmed it. My big birthday party had already been planned for that evening, and my well- meaning husband told me we could cancel if I wanted. Instead, I cried for an hour, then pulled myself together and continued with my plans. My friends weren’t sure what to do or say, but I told them that we were celebrating that I was alive. When I started treatment, I went to an oncologist in Alaska, where I was living at the time—but I quickly felt I wasn’t receiving the care and coordination I needed. My husband heard about Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), so we called to learn more. I can honestly say that I felt called to treat there, despite the fact that I lived thousands of miles away. (In fact, a commercial for CTCA appeared on TV as I was on the phone with my intake coordinator—how’s that for a coincidence?) A week later, we were at CTCA in Goodyear for my initial appointment, where I learned my cancer had metastasized. For months, I traveled to Phoenix every three weeks for appointments, and last spring I moved to the Valley permanently. Since beginning my cancer journey 18 months ago, I’ve endured chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. From the reception staff who always remembers my family when we walk into The Long-Distance Fighter by Pako Whannell D 124 INAZ 8x10.5 v7.indd 1241/15/20 4:02 PMthe hospital, to spiritual guide Pastor Jeff to Dr. Cynthia Lynch, my medical oncologist, to Dr. Marnee Spierer, my radiation oncologist, every care provider and employee I encountered on my journey has been wholly focused on my care and well-being. Mere hours after my first appointment, Dr. Lynch called to personally reassure me about my treatment plan. After my double mastectomy, I suff ered from several serious infections while I was back home in Alaska, and Dr. Raquel Prati, my breast surgeon, and her care manager personally called every doctor they could find to get me scheduled for emergency surgery there before I could travel back to CTCA. My care team treated me with an unbelievable amount of compassion and care, and I am so grateful to them. I’ve always been a bit of a health nut: I’m a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, physical ed. teacher and high school and club volleyball coach, and I owned my own Corefit studio in Kenai, Alaska, before moving to Goodyear. (I plan to open one in Goodyear once I wrap treatment!) I credit my physical and mental strength with helping me fight this disease—and I’m looking forward to bringing that determination to other CTCA patients as part of the hospital’s Cancer Fighters Care Net program. I consider it my new calling to give back and help other patients like me who are in need of support. Today, I’m living my life with appreciation for all that I’ve been given in my life and work to spread that hope to everyone I come across. there have been so many small moments with incredible people at CTCA that have added up to a truly wonderful experience there.
