< PreviousMAKING YOUR MARK MAKING YOUR MARK 28 AZFOOTHILLS.COM WELCOME to the second-annual Most Influential Phoenicians issue! After the issue’s inaugural year, one thing was very clear: the Valley surely isn’t short on men and women of all ages, professions and backgrounds who are making a big impact on this community we love so very much. Outside of the professional influence these movers and shakers have on a daily basis, they make a point to give back and inspire not only their peers but those who may follow in their footsteps. I am excited to introduce you to two remarkable twentysomethings: Lyndsey Fry, an Olympian who coaches the first NHL-sponsored girls-only program, and Geri Hormel, the founder of a foster care organization that specializes in pregnant pooches. There are plenty of “firsts” to celebrate in this group: Monica Garnes, the president of Fry's Food Stores and the first African-American division president in Kroger's history; Marc Garcia who just led Visit Mesa to become the first- ever destination marketing organization designated as a “Certified Autism Center;” and Chef Charleen Badman, 2019 winner of the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest, the first time the prize has gone to a local chef in more than a decade. The issue also spotlights locals who have starring roles in the Valley arts realm (and have so for many years), like Ib Andersen, who rings in 20 years with Ballet Arizona, and Bobb Cooper of Valley Youth Theatre who was name- dropped by Emma Stone in her Oscar speech(!). Our list of 30-plus individuals is rounded out with doctors who are changing the landscape of healthcare; lawyers with a passion for justice and upholding what is right; business leaders who are using their power for the betterment of the Valley; design and real estate pros who are beautifying Phoenix at every turn; and many other force-of-nature individuals that I can’t wait for you to meet. As you flip through these pages, I invite you to think about your own influence. What influence do you hope to have in your life? Whether you’re a “go big or go home” type or you believe “it’s the little things,” here’s to making your mark.
