Trendsetter to Know: Dr. Michael Wolff, M.D. of Southwest Spine & Sports

Dr. Michael Wolff, M.D., a double-board certified physician and founder of Southwest Spine & Sports, leads the southwest as the Discseel® Master Instructor, bringing a revolutionary, nonsurgical, outpatient procedure to his Scottsdale clinic to treat back pain resulting from damaged discs. We caught up with this Scottsdale trendsetter to discover why he believes the procedure can be a life-changer for people striving to get back to their active lifestyle.

AZF: You’re one of the first physicians in the U.S. to be credited as a Master Instructor using the innovative Discseel® Procedure. What is it?

Dr. Wolff: Medical leaders have called The Discseel® Procedure a “disruptive technology” because this new treatment is nonsurgical and uses a natural biologic that is injected into the damaged discs. The regenerative biologic repairs the leaking spinal discs, stimulates cell growth, improves the disc’s integrity, and reduces inflammation of the affected nerves. Essentially, the procedure “seals and heals the disc,” thus reducing debilitating back pain.

AZF: What makes this new procedure revolutionary?

Dr. Wolff: Traditional conservative approaches to back pain involve epidural steroid injections or surgery. Steroid injections may only last a short time and can lead to bone density loss if used for an extended period. Surgery is mechanical and more invasive. It can be costly and involve a lengthy recovery, and it runs the risk of accelerating degeneration in the surrounding discs. In comparison, Discseel® is a precise, minimally invasive procedure that treats the root cause of the problem and not just the symptoms, ultimately offering a better outcome for my patients.

AZF: You’re obviously passionate about developing regenerative solutions for chronic back pain. Do you treat any other areas of the body?

Dr. Wolff: I am a classically trained doctor (M.D.) specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), but my joy comes from helping people with all musculoskeletal injuries return to the life they love without surgery. I founded Southwest Spine & Sports 25 years ago on a philosophy of using advanced, minimally invasive treatments grounded in state-of-the-art technologies for painful back, muscle, nerve, and joint conditions. Whether you’re a professional athlete, a weekend warrior, or just enjoy walking the dog daily, the goal is to relieve the pain, restore function, and help my patients enjoy an active lifestyle.
