A typical day in my life includes…
my day starts with taking my sweet dog Milo for a morning walk. This refreshes me and energizes my creative spirit for the day. Afterwards, I reward myself with a homemade cappuccino. Then off to my home studio to make something fun! It’s easy to get lost in my project for hours.
I was born…
in Memphis, Tennessee! Although, I somehow lost my southern accent when I moved away. Every now and then a “y’all” and accent appears when I am talking to a fellow southerner. And yes, I do love grits.
My favorite thing about Arizona…
the beautiful sky that is ever changing in colors from sunrise to sunset. Though, I don’t usually see sunrise.
I’m listening to…
“Heart & Foal” the song! My daughter, Alexis Hillary, was inspired by my sculpture to write this song which is available on iTunes.
My family…
is the most important thing in my life.
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be…
my father who passed away before I started my art business. I would love to show him my sculptures/jewelry and my success with it now.
One thing I cannot live without…
the daily phone call from my husband when he takes a break to simply say “I love you” – i.e. that happened as I was doing this interview (cue the gushy music).
When I was younger, I wanted to be…
a fashion model! I did a few local runway shows and some print. If you’re lucky enough, you might come across a 1982 photo of me in an antebellum-style prom dress…parasol and all.
I’m inspired by…
the emotional interactions of humans and animals in nature. My most recent piece, Heart & Foal, captures the maternal bond between a mare and her foal. Another sculpture of mine, Essence of Eden, represents the eagerness of wanting something so badly but not being able to achieve it.
The one person who motivates me is…
my husband Lonnie! He is an engineer and computer forensics expert-very left side of the brain. His encouragement and love for what I do continually drives me to challenge myself as an artist and creative-mind.
If I could change anything in the world, it would be…
for more people to embrace our differences. It’s ok to be unique; in fact we should celebrate it more.
The perfect day would be…
making it to the gym.
My first job was…
in high school hand-painting promotional signs for The Loft Restaurant in Memphis. We negotiated that I would be paid in restaurant credits. It was fun to take a friend there for dinner and say, “bill it to my account.”
My favorite escape…
is sitting on the beach and listening to the waves.
My life…
is blessed with a wonderful family that puts up with my arty mess.
I’m currently working on…
a commissioned sculptural vase featuring a Gypsy Vanner horse. It’s really exciting to add a new breed of horse to my portfolio.
Always…
pick a good red wine if you are going to drink a glass.
Never…
give up even if someone else is better at it than you.
Favorite Quote…
“I’m a perfectionist to the best of my abilities” – Me.
Biggest Dream…
my husband and I recently took a trip to Santa Fe. I quickly fell in love with Canyon Road, it’s filled with artists and the creative energy there was so inspiring. It would be incredible to open gallery there.
My Pet Peeve(s)…
One, when my husband forgets that I hate tomatoes on my tuna sandwich. Two, politics on Facebook.
