Esquire Lists This Phoenix Wine Bar as One the Best in the U.S.

From glamorous hotel bars in New York City to art-decor lounges in West Hollywood, Esquire published its 2024 list of America’s best bars spanning the nation. Calling Phoenix home, Sauvage Wine Bar and Shop appeared at the very top of the coveted 42 top bars lineup.

Over the past 12 months, Esquire writers embarked on a nationwide tour to determine which bars would cut. Esquire co-writer Kevin Sintumuang emphasized that, “It’s not just about the drinks. Then again, it’s never just about the drinks.”

Sauvage is known for its natural and biodynamic local wines. Rotating chefs and DJs frequent the favorite wine spot. Sauvage is housed within the historic Helen Anderson house at McDowell Road and Third Avenue. This quaint English Cottage-style building has hosted many businesses throughout the years including HobNob’s Coffee House and Luana’s Coffee and Beer.

At the heart of Sauvage is a dedication to bringing the best natural wines to customers. Sauvage’s owner, Chris Lingua, has spent over 15 years in the food, wine and hospitality industry. He developed a deep love of crafting cocktails before he went on a dive into the wine world. After several years of working in the wine industry, Lingua shifted to distribution. He had a job at one of the largest distributors of wine and craft spirits in the United States. He helped country clubs, resorts and independent restaurants in Arizona with their drink menus.

The wine bar and shop was founded in 2017 when Lingua traveled to France. During his trip, he was inspired to leave his corporate job behind and start his very own wine shop. “Sauvage” means “wild” or “natural: in French, which is the essence of what Sauvage Wine Bar and Shop is all about. Lingua makes it a priority to source the most natural wine options. 200 rotating wine selections are available in the shop and online.

Although Sauvagre Wine Bar and Shop specializes in wine, they have a delectable food menu. Highlights include a charcuterie plate, kimchi grilled cheese, tin fish and Vin Blanc olives.

Most of the wine selections range from $20 to $60, where many of the varietals are produced on a small scale and are not mass-produced. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or simply looking for a unique bar experience, Sauvage Wine Bar and Shop offers an unparalleled blend of history, quality and passion. As Esquire’s recognition confirms, Sauvage is a must-visit wine spot in the Valley.
