Those who thrive on breakfast-based meals can rejoice as a new option has found its home in downtown Phoenix. Remix Coffee and Bagel shop has been slingin’ bagel sandwiches and signature coffee drinks to patrons since May 2024.
Owner/operator Shawn Allard was born in Montreal and moved to Arizona two decades ago. He and partner Lance Linderman met last year and combined their knowledge, and when the space in Phoenix became available, the duo took their chances and opened Remix.
“I’ve always loved the idea of owning a local coffee and sandwich shop,” Allard said. “The opportunity became available, and I felt there was no better time than now.”
Allard graduated from Arizona State in 2019 and went into dental consulting. In 2023, he purchased Novel Ice Cream (with two locations in Phoenix and Mesa and a third coming soon) and began working with bagels shortly after.
“I went from dental consulting to the restaurant space to be more creative and build unique and quality experiences for people,” Allard said.
Remix is not a sit-down restaurant; patrons scan the QR code outside the shop to order and pay. The orders are then delivered from the window and taken to go, or patrons can hang out on the patio outside the shop.
Menu items include staple coffee drinks like espresso, Americano, and latte, as well as in-house creations like Grandma’s Favorite (macadamia and white chocolate), the Take 5 (caramelized peanut, salted caramel and chocolate sauce), or the Dateland (dates, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon).
Six bagel (and one sourdough) sandwiches are on the menu. Da’ Dip comes with thinly sliced roast beef, broth, horsey sauce, cheddar sauce, salt and pepper. The Bandit features homemade shmear with an egg, mortadella, ham, American cheese, Remix relish and seasoned salt and pepper.
The Remix menu also boasts tater tots as a side or a meal. The Golden Girls features tater tots with spicy ketchup, cheddar sauce, tartar sauce, pepper and seasoned salt.
On the drink side, Remix has various soda mixes, like the Otter Pop, made with Mountain Dew or Diet Mountain Dew with lime and raspberry, or The Hedgehog, which combines Sprite with lime, blue raspberry, and coconut cream syrups.
The menu items’ names come from a collaboration of experiences and interests between Allard and Linderman. James Colaw, manager of Driftwood Coffee – where Remix gets its coffee – works with the duo to create the drinks.
Allard and his team are also working toward building a hospitality group that aims to serve downtown Phoenix.
“We want to support the community by providing high-quality products for a reasonable price. We put passion into every shot we pull, every sandwich we build and every customer we serve,” he said.
Remix is located at 1028 Grand Ave. in Phoenix. For more information, visit remixphx.com.
