Explore Immersive Multimedia Art at VIVA PHX: ‘DEEP TIES at the Abbey’ Exhibition

VIVA PHX has announced a community collaboration with the Phoenix Art Museum, Palabra, Homeland, M.I.R.A.G.E., Michael Webb (HEARD Museum), and others to offer a unique, one-day-only art experience at The Abbey on Monroe. The hollowed-out church will transform into an immersive multimedia art space for one day only, demonstrative of the blossoming Arizona modern art scene.

Phoenix Art Museum will curate the west wing of the Abbey with a pop-up group exhibit featuring Guillermo Gutierrez, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Villamil & Villamil, Mehrdad Mirzaie, and Sam Vo.

“We’re excited to partner with VIVA PHX to showcase local artists at the festival. This collaboration blends art and music, incorporating elements from our Amplified Festival to uplift and celebrate the local arts scene,” Giovana Aviles, MAC Curator of Engagement at Phoenix Art Museum, said.

DEEP TIES at the Abbey will also include a special activation by the local Indigenous collective, Homeland, titled “Coming Home.” Four Indigenous master artists will provide a look into their process in the comfort of their homes.

“The activation will bring the simplicity of Rez life to downtown Phoenix, encapsulating the beauty within Indigenous creations and their humble origins. We invite you to explore how even with modest beginnings and limited resources, the resilience of Indigenous people is infused into these masterful creations,” Co-founder Ty LodgePole said. “They go on to grace the pages of illustrious magazines and are housed in lavish mansions, but the creators never forget where these pieces originate.”

After sunset, the Abbey will come alive with Creature Interstice, a site-specific video installation by M.I.R.A.G.E. (a collaboration between Nika Kaiser and Max Telos). The installation features an assemblage of video fragments documenting our encounters with non-human creatures within human-altered environments.

“We pose a critical question in Creature Interstice: How can we cultivate a deeper appreciation for the intricate lives of animals with whom we share the world?” M.I.R.A.G.E. said.

The videos will light up the walls of the historic space, creating an immersive backdrop for musical acts Pijama Piyama, DJENTS, Karima Walker, and c75525, who will perform live in the courtyard as part of the sound session curated by Jorge Ignacio Torres of Palabra.

DEEP TIES at the Abbey will explore local flavors with Arizona Natural Wines from Cactus Cru and a one-of-a-kind Elixir Bar by Smoothie Vortex.
