The Orpheum Theatre Phoenix Debuts New Renovations

A new chapter is beginning for the Orpheum Theatre, a historic cornerstone of downtown Phoenix for nearly a century. The theatre opened its doors in 1929 and has undergone a transformative renovation designed to preserve its iconic history while embracing cutting-edge technology. In January, these multi-year modernization efforts were unveiled during a special open house event called Orpheum Reimagined.

The heart of the renovations is an innovative theatrical dome lighting and audio system that seeks to capture the beauty of Arizona’s natural landscapes. Before each performance, audiences can look up and immerse themselves in a breathtaking spectacle. From vibrant sunrises and dramatic monsoon storms to starlit skies and the awe-inspiring Milky Way, the theatre’s dome lighting system will evoke the wonder of Arizona’s outdoors.

“The Orpheum’s new dome lighting and audio system are unlike anything found in any other Arizona theatre,” said Jerry Harper, Director of the Phoenix Convention Center & Venues. “This is the show before the show, a sensory experience immersing audiences in landscapes. We aimed to bring something truly unique to our audiences and showcase the elements we love about our beautiful state.”

A Dolby 7.1 surround sound system accompanies the lighting displays, featuring a curated soundtrack that blends nature sounds recorded across Arizona, including those from Usery Mountain Regional Park and the forests near Flagstaff. This combination of visuals and sound elevates the theatre experience to new heights.

While the theatre embraces modern technology, it remains deeply rooted in its nearly 100-year history. The renovations carefully balance comfort with historical preservation, ensuring the Orpheum continues to honor its past while offering a more comfortable and accessible experience for patrons.

The seating capacity has been increased to 1,410 to accommodate more guests and 144 original balcony chairs have been meticulously restored to retain the theatre’s classic charm. The original, aged wood has been replaced with period-accurate upcycled barn wood, maintaining the theatre’s historical appeal.

The Orpheum Theatre’s renovations also ensure it remains a premier venue for world-class performances. Upgrades to the technical aspects of the venue will meet the needs of productions of any scale, such as advanced LED lighting systems featuring quiet cooling fans, a state-of-the-art 60,000-lumen Barco projector, and one of Arizona’s largest screens (21’4.5” x 42’9”), offering an unparalleled cinematic experience.

There are also upgraded dressing rooms, versatile rigging systems, and spacious stage wings to ensure a smooth production environment, allowing performers and crews to work with ease.

“We knew the Orpheum needed to maintain its historic elegance throughout these efforts,” Assistant Director Bob Fingerman said. “Simultaneously, we recognized the need to incorporate creative and innovative solutions to blend history with modern technology and comfort. The result is truly awe-inspiring, and we’re confident that audiences will enjoy it for decades.”

Home to diverse performances – from comedy shows to ballet to intimate concerts – the Orpheum Theatre has been a downtown Phoenix landmark since its opening in 1929. It continues to be vital to the region’s thriving performing arts community. For more information, visit orpheumphx.com.
