MTV VMA Awards – The Good, Bad and Questionable

So let me start by asking this… Does anyone know why MTV has a Video Music Awards show anymore? I mean do they still play music? I actually stopped watching once bad reality TV prevailed. In fact for me there are several questions about MTV and the music business in general..…like why do so many “Rock” bands have full sentences for names such as Thirty Seconds to Mars and almost everyone in the rock category? And why was Kayne West wearing an outfit that Jon Bon Jovi would have worn twenty years ago? And, why did Justin Beiber look like a teen version of Elton John? Needless to say…I feel old. But I was more than curious to watch after seeing all the tweets about the show.

In a smart and convicted act of performance art Lady Gaga did a great job of stripping away the overdone for a “drag” greaser/Westside story version of You and I. I’m not sure if my favorite part was her vocal, Brian May joining her on stage or the confused jaw dropping of audiences members like Britney Spears, Katie Holmes and a slew of other female A-Listers. I could see the wheels turning in Britney’s head wondering… oh man, now do I have to do drag?

I will say however that even if Britney’s mind was overtaxed by the Gaga thing…. her outfit a black Moschino beaded romper was darling in person…but the red carpet pictures were a tad dismal looking.

And how about Beyonce in that Lanvin orange asymmetrical shoulder caftan? She looked glowing and gorgeous with shimmery bronze and peach makeup…the glowing part of course made total sense during her performance once she unbuttoned her sequin Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo jacket to reveal a little bun in the oven secret.

Then there was the amazingly beautiful and talented Adele who belted out an incredible rendition of Someone Like You in a sleek black cocktail frock. She arrived on the black carpet in a different curve hugging vintage inspired dress with her hair coiffed to full perfection. But what I loved the most perhaps were her ultra- long beige talons that reminded me of Catherine Deneuve in Belle du Jour or Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crowne Affair…full on late sixties early seventies chic.

I also thought that Celina Gomez looked smashing in her Julien McDonald lace front gown and Brian Atwood heels.

And a shout out to some of the guys, I know Ne-Yo hasn’t really changed his look for a while I still thought he looked pretty dapper and his performance brought back a bit of class to the evening.

Lastly even though I had a very hard time forgiving the fact that he mixed in Nirvana with the rest of his routine Chris Brown did look rather sharp in his all white garb… a hard thing to pull off unless you are in a Gucci campaign.
