In typical mom fashion, my mom calls me yesterday freaking out about what? Yup, the swine flu. It looks like the media has (almost) turned away from talking about the recession and has now begun to obsess about something else. This member of the media, however, will continue obsessing about the same thing. I figure, you can get your bad news anywhere, just pop open any news site or turn on the TV. But when you’re reading your AFM Style Files it’s time to escape to the land of….pretty things.
Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t mean pretty things are shallow or don’t offer any good. Take the Neiman Marcus The Good Event for example. This charitable cause is definitely newsworthy and absolutely worth paying attention to.
This year, Neiman Marcus has partnered with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization to help raise funds to benefit the Feeding America network. The Good Event will run Thursday, April 30th through Saturday, May 2nd. Neiman Marcus shoppers who buy a $40 donation card between those days will receive a 30% discount in the Contemporary Sportswear, Sport Shop, Dress Collections and Men’s Contemporary Sportswear department. One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the purchase of a donation card will benefit a Feeding America local food bank. So proceeds of purchases made at Neiman Marcus Scottsdale Fashion Square will benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank. The remainder will benefit Feeding America’s national chapter.
“To be a great company you have to be a good company. This belief and commitment has been at the heart of our corporate values for over a century. As our founder Herbert Marcus famously said, ‘It’s not enough to take out of the community, you must give back.’ It is in this spirit that Neiman Marcus has created “The Good Event” as a way for the community to join in our efforts with a donation to Feeding America,” said Neiman Marcus President and CEO, Karen Katz.
Sadly, current demand for food is up a reported 80% over last year due to the current economic crisis and unemployment number rising. Arizona has been especially hit hard.
If you were bound to go shopping this weekend do your part and help! You can purchase your $40 donation card at any of the participating departments listed above. Plus, you’ll get a great 30% discount on the shopping you do that day so really, it’s win-win for everyone.

oh nice!! SO THERE.
This is so great! I hate that food prices are up. Glad someone is trying to give back and help out.
I most certainly don’t mind shopping for a good cause.
$40 is totally doable, and I like the 30% off too! Great event.
This gives me a great reason to shop this weekend.
Always classy, Neiman Marcus.
