It was really only a matter of time. With her connections to the fashion industry, supermodel bffs (read: Karlie Kloss), and killer style, Taylor Swift will have her own clothing line.
Before you get too excited, the Swift “1989” album-branded line, including dresses and sweatshirts, will only be available in China.
Swift partnered with China’s second-largest e-commerce company, JD.com Inc., and Alibaba to sell the new fashion line that will debut in August to coordinate with the launch of her “1989” tour visit to Shanghai in November.
Critics have since pointed out that the combination of Swift’s initials, “TS,” and album, “1989,” which are both prominently featured on the merchandise, could be misinterpreted by Chinese consumers to stand for the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989, when hundreds of Chinese students were killed in pro-democracy protests.
Swift posted a video introducing her new clothing line to her fans to China’s microblogging site Weibo.
“Ni hao, it’s Taylor Swift,” she says. “Be sure to check out my new authentic merchy [merchandise], now available in China.”
For now, we’ll have to wait and see what the clothes looks like and if they will all be made available for Taylor’s Chinese fans.
