Must Have Trend – Shift Dresses!

It is official, at least I think it is. Spring Training, Spring Break and Springing forward on the clock…can we call is Spring officially? Whether you do or don’t call it by the official name it still means that it’s time to put away the winter regalia and look ahead to lighter and brighter wares.

I for one am ready! Last night I attended a lovely event at the Skye Restaurant and Lounge where I was treated to the likes of 3 tenors…the International ones not the famous ones, an ABBA tribute band, and a fun little cover band whose name I can’t recall and a lovely dinner. It’s always interesting attending events here locally because you are never quite sure what the dress code will be. Shall I go dressy, casual and somewhere in between…the answer, whatever you do someone will be more casual (in jeans and a tank) and someone will be more dressed up (in an over the top cocktail dress)

And at this time of the year, there will be those that are wearing their fall shoes (like me, I admit I love those booties!) and some that will dive voraciously into the Spring blooms (the woman in the bright orange silk)

In any case, all this babbling leads me to my point. Everyone must have a go-to dress or two that are perfect for every occasion come sunny Spring or dark of winter. And this morning Who What Wear must have read my mind when they featured the shift trend. I love a shift dress. It’s possibly the easiest thing to wear ever! That one piece that looks like perfection with the feminine pair of heels or kittens or the right flats.

Giambatista Valli’s for Spring showed such an amazing collection of dresses with a combination of prints and colorblocking cut so well that they look fresh and modern while still being flattering. And yes the one shown here might be slimming the wallet a bit at over $4k but if you have the dough, I say go for it!

The best thing about a shift is that you can style them in any direction. Alexa Chung went with a more fresh and girlish approach with her Marc Jacobs wool crepe dress and MJ handbag. And Olivia Palermo added a bit of feminine flair to her Giambatista Valli dress with a pop of color on her feet. If you are yearning for something similar try this one by See by Chloe at revolve.com

And of course when I saw Kate Bosworth in the intense orange Calvin Klein dress I and black patent ankle boots I thought in the words of Rachel Zoe…Bananas! That is what I love about Kate B somehow she can pull off the hardest combo’s and make them look effortless. J Crew made a lovely version for the season jcrew.com

Lastly Elisa Sednaoui opted for a gray shift worn with platform ankle strap shoes a look that works just as well for the office as it works for a night on the town. Minimal and chic!
