Stripes though a beloved classic worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Alexa Chung can very quickly turn too nautical or even worse…you can end up looking like Paris Hilton’s cell mate. Here are a few tips on how to select the right stripes no matter your shape or size.
Top a Trend: One of the easiest ways to keep stripes looking fresh is to pair them with something very of the moment. This season is a great time to mix stripes with florals or brights like my personal fave, citron.
American Beauty: I will never get tired of a simple thin striped top with a boat neck, some denim cutoffs and flat sandals.
Stripes and Solids: Anchor your stripe with a solid color to help keep from looking busy.
Take Direction: Consider the size and the direction of the striped piece you are considering. Wider stripes make you look wider and thinner stripes tend to make people look thinner. Also, it is easier on the eye to have a break in patterning. So when wearing a dress for example it can help to choose one where all of the stripes are not going in the same direction.
Color in the Lines: Don’t be afraid to go with color when selecting a striped piece. There are some really fun color combinations this summer and is a great change of pace from the more common option of navy and white.
With so many ways to wear them, its no wonder that stripes have cemented their way into fashion history. This season is a great time to pick up a few striped pieces to add variety to your wardrobe. Make sure to keep in mind that this is a piece that can be worn for years so try to avoid anything too trendy.
