I definitely wasn’t feeling it for fall, but the jumpsuit has totally grown on me for spring 2009. From romper, capri and long versions to sleeveless and shortsleeved ones, there’s just about any jumpsuit to suit any gal.
The funny thing about the jumpsuit is it started out as such a utilitarian garment. The Phoenix Art Museum just recently held an exhibition in the Kelly Ellman Fashion Design Gallery, “One for All and All for One: The Jumpsuit” that traces the history of the jumpsuit and times perfectly with its resurgence back on the fashion radar.
Mechanics wear them, babies wear them, skydivers wear them, astronauts wear them and the one-piece article of clothing is now back in fashion for the ladies too. They first started to appear on the fashion radar around the 1960s, became really popular in the 1980s and have been in and out of fashion ever since. But for many, the jumpsuit still conjures up connotations of Nascar drivers, pilots, janitors or entertainers (think Elvis Presley, Britney Spears and any other concert diva that comes to mind).
In case jumpsuits still makes you picture nothing but a plumber, here are a few female-friendly ones that are suitable for much more than unclogging a septic tank.
This Black Halo strapless jumpsuit in white from Intermix is casual and cute. $450.
I super heart this Stella McCartney silk twill halter jumpsuit in grey from Intermix. $995.
These Barron Duquette jumpshorts are great for running around town on a summer afternoon. I’d wear them with a chic pair of gladiator flats. Intermix, $395.
This Myne “Abbie” jumpsuit from shopbop.com is super sassy. I like the V-neck cut and the back has a gathered T-strap. Looks like a night out on the town! $317.
This Zimmerman silk jumpsuit with bow detail and cutout front is definitely a little more risque. If you’re willing to take the risk, it’s $437 at shopbop.com.
This Pency blazeresque romper in peach is a good example of how varied rompers and jumpsuits can be. $466, shopbop.com.
If you’re looking for something on the dressier side, as in cocktail hour appropos, this Sue Stemp silk charmeuse jumpsuit is the way to go. $1,095, shopbop.com.
I realy like how different this Thakoon romper is. $765, shopbop.com.
This silk halter Larsen Gray jumpsuit in black is super chic. $224, shopbop.com.
Try something a bit more sophisticated like this Robert Rodriguez belted jumpsuit from Neiman Marcus. $364.
Another upscale and sophisticated twist on the jumpsuit is this 3.1 Phillip Lim look from Net-a-porter.
Ready to embrace the jumpsuit trend? What do you think???
Yeah, the black jumpsuit – 3rd from the top.
Man, you’d have to be proportionately lanky to look good in one. I like em though~!
The black, baggy one is kinda like the female-version of the Hammer pants.
The rompers are pretty cute, but you gotta have legs to infinity to pull it off.
These girls look fantastic..but I just can’t do it.
not going to lie…not super thrilled about this jumpsuit trend
i dont love the jumpsuit trnd, but i did see Jill on the Real Housewives of NYC wearing one last night (cute shorts) and it looked kinda cute. i figure if she can wear one, co can i.
Although I am not really a jumpsuit kind of gal, I think that this would definitely look cute on others.
not for me… not even for anyone else. this is a trend that should stay in the past tense.
The jumpsuit is amazing in any form!! I just love it! My favorie is the Rodriguez one, its really classy!
There’s only one of those jumpsuits I would MAYBE wear.. I just don’t think I could go that far for fashion.
These are personally not for me but I like the Larsen Gray and Robert Rodriguez jumpsuits you featured..They look more sophisticated.
