Q & A: Rod Cullum of Cullum Homes

Let us introduce you to the Valley’s top design and build professionals. Today, let’s get to know Rod Cullum of Cullum Homes and learn about his super-unique, super-luxe favorite Valley project.

Instagram, Twitter and Facebook handles: Our Facebook handle is Cullum Homes; we are not on Instagram and Twitter currently.

How did you get started in the design/build industry? I started out (over 35 years ago!) as a broker representing other builders and became frustrated by unkept promises, and also believed the process could be done in a much more customer-friendly and open fashion.

What is your favorite project in Arizona? We all enjoyed creating the one-of-a-kind “Car Bar” (pictured above) home in our Village at Mountain Shadows development. This residence currently serves as a model home, and we have hosted many parties and charitable events in this unique and memorable space.

What inspires you and your work? The fun of creating the home that fits our client’s lifestyle.

What is something timeless every home should have? Embracing indoor and outdoor spaces. Comfortable and functional for year-round enjoyment.

What is considered trendy in homes at this time? Clean architectural lines, lighter palette, soft contemporary architecture, flexible and adaptable living spaces.

What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment? My wife and I building a company for 35 years that now has our son and daughter working with us, representing the next generation of designing and constructing homes that inspire and meet the needs of our clients.

What advice do you have for young people or students hoping to pursue a design/build career? Learn that the smallest details often make the biggest difference, and that what you say and how you say it also makes a difference.
