Carefree, Ariz. is home to an extraordinary architectural marvel, now listed by Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty. The “Slingman Home” is an awe-inspiring residence built seamlessly into 2.12 acres of canyon.

Known as Arizona’s premier luxury real estate brokerage, Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty has garnered a reputation for showcasing some of the most unique homes from well-known architects in the Valley. However, the Slingman Home stands apart; effortlessly combining architectural brilliance, natural splendor and historical significance.

The impressive 3,400-square-feet dwelling is considered a landmark residence, captivating visitors with its stunning features and historical value. It was built by the acclaimed “Dean of Rock Engineering” Gerry Jones, who was a Taliesin instructor of extreme terrain architecture for 17 years.

The home boasts immense privacy due to its location on the canyon, reachable only by bridge. It has one of the most private pools in the world, surrounded by rock cliffs that provide a myriad of unique sitting areas. The secluded outdoor space also features a covered patio, balcony and casita that overlook breathtaking mountain views.

Yet, the rocky exterior comes in stark contrast to a comfortable and cozy interior. With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, the home caters to both relaxation and functionality. The kitchen contains multiple ovens, granite countertops and a breakfast room that is sure to make cooking effortless and enjoyable.

The dwelling is as rich in features as it is in history. As part of the “Golden Triangle,” the home is neighbor to the residences of Carefree founders K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington. The Slingman Home not only holds a place in local history, it’s also known for its feature in the sequel of the popular 1941 drama film, “Citizen Kane.”

Film icon Orson Welles was a frequent renter of this astounding property, where he and director John Huston filmed the sequel to “Citizen Kane.” The sequel set a record for the longest time a film has been in production, taking 48 years to complete. The Netflix documentary, “They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead”, even includes behind-the-scenes footage of Carefree and the Slingman House.

Ironically, Welles was evicted from the Slingman House for violating the “no filming” clause of his lease. In a hurry, he left behind his size 68 boxer shorts, which the Slingman family humorously used to hoist up the flagpole and celebrated with a wine toast.

Agent Preston Westmoreland, representing Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty, is listing the home for $4,500,000. “This home is easily one of the most unique that I’ve ever represented, and I am incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to find its new owner,” says Westmoreland. “It’s not every day that you get to work with a property that represents both the unique Arizona landscape and a slice of film history.”

The home is located at 7102 E. Stagecoach Pass Road in Carefree, Ariz. Watch a virtual tour of the property here.
