Making the Most out of Those Small Home Spaces

Living in a space with limited square footage does not have to feel small. From furniture choices to décor decisions, there are many ways to make a small room feel big. Thanks to expert Kara Raney, project manager at Sherman Residential, here are a few ways to make a small space feel large.

Keeping your space light and bright is a way to make it feel bigger without purchasing furniture. Mirrors help by tricking the eye to make your room appear more prominent in the correct lighting.

“Use of color can absolutely help with your space,” Raney said. “It either brings things toward you or pulls away from you. It can make a space look larger, shorter, or taller.”

While fun and exciting, excess décor can make a room appear smaller. Maintaining clear walkways throughout your space makes it more comfortable and can have a relaxing effect.

“A cluttered space can make the room look smaller,” Raney said. “Allowing those rooms not to be oversaturated with furniture or oversaturated with décor helps in the long run.”

Looking up proper sizing guides online for your space can help ensure your décor and furniture fit correctly. Websites and apps like Pinterest have an assortment of helpful resources.

“If we’re looking at a small living room, a lot of the time the tendency is to go toward, ‘I’m going with a tiny area rug to save money and space,’ but then it makes everything look smaller,” Raney said.

Multiuse furniture can open up a room by saving space and eliminating the need for storage boxes or other pieces. Popular multiuse furniture includes sleeper sofas, bed frames with drawers built underneath, desks that double as nightstands, and more.

“One we’ve used a lot in our models is stools that fit under the counter when not in use to help open up your walkways during the day or when you don’t need those items,” Raney said. “Many of those multiuse pieces can help out, especially anywhere you can utilize storage.”

IKEA and Wayfair are great places to find affordable multiuse furniture options and décor. To learn more about Sherman Residential, visit shermanresidential.com.
