< PreviousTYLER HOLLIS Tyler Hollis 30 AZFOOTHILLS.COM Six years ago, I moved from Southern California to Phoenix with no friends, family, or clue about what I wanted in life. As I began to experience the beauty of this state, I realized that this would be my forever home. So I left my old life behind, started a new one, and, like most Arizonans, never looked back. The Best of Our Valley Competition represents the reason why I fell in love with Arizona. It wasn’t just the state itself but also the businesses, nightlife, events, and PEOPLE that make this valley unique. It has been such an honor to work with and present the 2021 winners. They are indeed the best of the best! 2020 was rough for us all, but with more individuals flocking and settling into our state’s borders, I am so excited about the future of this magazine and this competition. Congratulations to the winners, and I look forward to seeing you all in September at the Best of Our Valley event. And a special thank you to Al Molina of Molina Fine Jewelers for hosting the event at your gorgeous location. We will see you all then, cheers! STACIE J. AND RICHARD J STEPHENS ON More than 18 million people around the world will hear those three frightening words this year. Gateway for Cancer Research is on a mission to create a world where those words no longer strike fear. For 30 years, Gateway has been funding transformational cancer research at leading research institutions around the world. It is one of the only nonprofits that invests exclusively in innovative, early-phase cancer clinical trials with the strongest potential for significant breakthroughs in cancer care. These early-stage clinical trials are the critical first step on the path to newer and better cancer medicines, treatments and therapies. “What truly distinguishes Gateway from other cancer research organiza- tions is our sharp focus on healing patients now while we help the field move toward future cures,” said Gateway President and CEO Michael Burton. GATEWAY FOR CANCER RESEARCHSince its founding in 1991, Gateway has invested $90 million in more than 190 cancer clinical trials worldwide. Through these clinical trials, more than 9,000 cancer patients are being given more options, more time with loved ones and a better quality of life. They are people like Liesel Von Imhof. At 16, after experiencing severe migraines in July of 2016, Liesel had a routine eye exam followed by a trip to the hospital ER. An MRI revealed the culprit — a large tumor in her brain. Liesel was admitted to Seattle Children’s Hospital where an early-stage Gateway-funded clinical trial would change her life. Pediatric neuro-oncologist Dr. Sarah Leary was testing a drug commonly referred to as “tumor paint” because it causes tumor cells to glow under special lights during surgery. Using Dr. Leary’s tumor paint, surgeons were able to successfully remove Liesel’s tumor without damaging her healthy brain tissue. The gifted honor student is now at Harvard University pursuing her dream to study biomedical engineering. Success stories like Liesel’s bring to life the enduring vision of Gateway for Cancer Research Chairman of the Board Richard J Stephenson, Founder of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) and international merchant banker, and Vice Chair Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, Chair of Functional Medicine for CTCA and Founder and CEO of health and well- ness empire VibrantDoc. After Mr. Stephenson’s mother received a cancer diagnosis, he and his family searched for the best available cancer treat- ments and soon realized that even the most renowned hospitals were not focused on providing comprehensive, patient-centered and advanced cancer care. After his mother’s passing, Mr. Stephenson vowed to change the face of cancer care with a whole-person cancer treatment approach, leading him to launch both CTCA and Gateway for Cancer Research. The Stephensons’ shared passion for ending cancer through research and core belief in patient-centered care are hallmarks of their leadership of Gateway. The global citizens, part-time Paradise Valley residents, and model philanthropists spearhead Gateway’s fundraising initiatives and generously underwrite Gateway operations, ensuring that 99 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to funding cancer research that heals patients today while advancing closer to cures. The Stephensons host and underwrite Gateway’s flagship Arizona fundraiser, Vino con Stelle, the Valley’s world-class culinary, wine and star-studded philanthropic experience. Vino con Stelle gives those in the Valley’s philanthropic community who recognize the value of investing in cancer research a perfect opportunity to be the gateway to ending cancer as we know it. Cancer is a complex, global, public health threat that requires a global response. Gateway harnesses the shared passion and collective drive of cancer researchers, physicians and philanthropists to bring to life the novel ideas that can make a world of difference in the lives of those 18 million people facing a cancer diagnosis this year and take the fear out of hearing those three words. @azfoothills #azfoothills 37 GATEWAYCR.ORG INSTAGRAM: @GATEWAYFORCR “W ha t t r u l y dist i n guishes GATEWAY fr o m o t h e r c a n c e r re s e arc h or g a n i z a t i ons i s ou r s h ar p f o c u s on h e a l i n g p a t i e n t s now w h i l e we help t h e f i el d move tow a rd f u ture c u res .” Bob and Dawn Davis Ph otogr aphy and Design Cour tney Lively Ph otogr aphy MICHAEL BURTON President and CEO of Gateway for Cancer Research DR.
