Parents feel more in control of their children’s education and are happy to look around for the right school. “The reason why school choice options have increased in popularity in Arizona is because of the competitive edge, extracurricu- lar activities that public schools have has become less important to students and especially parents than the benefits private and charter schools can provide,” said Harrison Rogers, CEO and founder of Lexington Services and Lexington Life Academy K-12 private schools for students with autism. Recent events have shown the creativity and modification skills teachers have to create an online or hybrid classroom. These options, plus many more in Arizona, give parents numerous ways to help their children succeed in school and feel more in control during times of uncertainty. As a parent and a leader in education, Rogers has seen firsthand what the pandemic has done to education. “The coronavirus definitely provided the opportunity to find many inadequacies in our education struc- tures,” stated Rogers. “It also provided the realization that we as parents are not as equipped to home teach our own children as many of us wish we could be.” While teachers and parents adjusted to a new normal of education, many parents found other options for their child’s schooling. Some choose the online route through their original school, some were homeschooled, and others embraced private and charter schools. Each learning method has its pros and cons. However, overall the access to education is still there and is more critical now more than ever. “As a parent of several school- aged children, education access and the opportunity to have options to choose from is the difference between my children excelling or realizing sub-par results,” said Rogers. What about the school level? What could be done at the front line of education to succeed and to spread that success to their students? “Freeing up superintendents and principals to operate their schools independently would be incredibly fruitful. I know so many superin- tendents and principals that know how to stretch a dollar better than anybody. Still, they can't make decisions at their level in regard to funding,” said Rogers. “Instead, decisions are made at school board levels or policymaker levels, when they aren't the ones in the classrooms, meeting with parents and staff and would not know how to make decisions that are in the best interest of their students, parents, and staff like the principals and superintendents would.” best [OF OUR VALLEY 2021] xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Access to Education More Critical Than Ever Private education leader, Harrison Rogers, shares thoughts on Arizona education HARRISON ROGERS ***** Most INFLUENTIAL MAN IN THE VALLEY People 42 AZFOOTHILLS.COMEmpowering. I'm Paige, mama of three, creative type, and quite crunchy. I've always wanted to be a mom, and I am grateful every day that these three beautiful souls are in my life. My favorite part of being a mom is getting to be a kid again and seeing the world anew through their innocent eyes. I never traveled much as a kid myself, but now I love taking them on adventures and exploring new places both near and far. I started my blog and Instagram seven years ago, when my daughter was first born, as a way to connect with other new moms and express myself through a creative outlet. Since then, my Instagram, blog, and other social outlets have grown as I have learned new skills from photography to styling and, more recently, a bit of videography, too, to incorporate into my full-time content-creating gig. Being able to create every day and still get to pick up my kids from school is a dream come true, and I'm so grateful to all those who have supported me along the way. I started dabbling in drag when I was a sophomore in college and began taking it seriously my senior year, in 2016. As I became more comfortable in my sexuality, I quickly realized that drag was an outlet for my creative passions: music, painting, fashion, and media. I have always said that if I could choose ANY job, I would be a pop star regardless of skills and qualifications. Now… I can’t sing well, so I think drag is the next best thing. Drag allows me to express my art in multiple ways, all at once, and that’s what I love about it. What are some of the inspirations for your looks? I pull a lot of inspiration from pop culture for my looks. Female musicians are always setting the standard so high for conceptual albums and “eras” that I use them as my muses. When you look at artists like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani … They all have these very iconic and distinct looks that anyone can recognize. I want to create that same energy and provide a familiar yet unique take on what I present to the crowd. I start almost all of my costumes myself, so I truly get to have the creative freedom to make my looks, however, and whenever I want. I also like to do impersona- tions of pop stars, like Gaga and Dua Lipa, and creating replicas of their looks is really fun to do. My specialty is delivering a perform- ance of a song released the same day as the show. What does drag mean to you? Drag means so much to me. On top of being the creative outlet I talked about earlier, it’s really a safe space for me as a gay man. Drag is rooted in acceptance and queerness, which is so powerful to so many people. The community that drag fosters is strong and welcoming, something that I haven’t found elsewhere. I love the sense of liberation I feel when I’m on stage and the happiness I see from the audience while they’re enjoying a show. Initially developed by Discovery Land Corporation, the member-owned Club is situated at 3,000 feet on 713 acres of high desert rolling terrain in North Scottsdale. Tom Fazio designed the award-winning 18-hole golf course, which surrounds the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Desert Lodge Clubhouse. Mirabel Members enjoy an active lifestyle of golf, fitness, racket sports, dining, and socializing. The membership size is intimate (275 golf and 50 social members), and the culture is welcoming and inclusive. Another central attribute of the culture is the Mirabel Members’ efforts to be good citizens of the community and “give back” by proudly investing time, energy, and resources in organizations that provide services to people in need here in the Valley of the Sun. The Club’s annual “Hope for the Cause” fundraiser, which benefits the HonorHealth Research & Innovation Institute, has been in place for the past 13 years. This effort has raised $4 million through annual men’s and ladies golf tournaments, 5K runs, and both silent and live auctions, which take place during the annual gala evening. Mirabel donations are used to fund ground-breaking research and clinical trials focused on personal- ized medicine to fight the war against cancer. In addition, the ladies of Mirabel hold an annual luncheon and raffle benefitting the Foothills Food Bank; funds raised provide meals for needy Cave Creek and Carefree-area school-age children to take home for the weekend. During the holidays, the Club sponsors an annual Toys for Tots to drive to provide toys to disadvantaged children. Several nonprofit golf tourna- ments take place at Mirabel benefitting such organizations as the Foothills Caring Corp and Hope Kids. The Club also collects used golf equipment and apparel for donation to The First Tee. At Mirabel, the saying “charity begins at home” is exemplified by the Mirabel Magic Employee Scholarship Fund launched earlier this year which benefits employees and their children who seek additional education or training. Additionally, Mirabel employees who face a personal or financial crisis are encouraged to work with a Member-led volunteer team who will solicit support on their behalf. Mirabel Members generously donate whatever is needed. Many Mirabel employees donate their Time Off to help fellow employees who cannot work during a time of crisis.
