AZF: What is your “life motto?”
RT: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Focus on your journey, not others. I made this my life motto because, as an entrepreneur, I have to realize I’m not the only person in my industry, but I should never feel discouraged because of that.
AZF: Did you always know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur? If not, when did you realize that it was the right path right for you?
RT: I wasn’t one of the lucky ones with parents or anyone in my family who was an entrepreneur, so it seemed foreign to me. I was taught to get a college education and work hard in corporate America. It didn’t sit right with me when working for other companies, and they wanted me to keep me at a mediocre level. It was strange that every company I worked for never had my best interests at hand. There’s also a lot of work politics when it comes to corporate America that I didn’t like, and when working for companies, many of my higher-ups made their personal problems my problems. That’s when I knew I had to be out of there. That took a toll on my mental health, and I realized I could be doing what I was doing for other companies but for myself, without the drama.
AZF: How do you feel best supported?
RT: I feel best supported when the people I love only say good things behind my back. I’m honestly very supported in my life. I have a wonderful husband, family, and friends. I’m blessed beyond words when it comes to having a great support system!
AZF: What motivates you to keep going amidst the challenges that come with being an entrepreneur?
RT: Entrepreneurship is exciting but comes with unique challenges, often starting with financial uncertainty due to unpredictable income and difficulties securing funding, which can be stressful and risky. I juggle various roles, from management to marketing, often working long hours that can lead to burnout. I also face high-stakes decisions without the safety net of an established company, making every choice critical to success or failure. Navigating these challenges requires resilience, adaptability, and strong decision-making, but the rewards of building something from the ground up can make it all worthwhile.
AZF: Describe your perfect Saturday morning.
RT: My perfect Saturday morning would be when my husband brings me my favorite Starbucks drink when I wake up and then we walk our three dogs. I love times like that because I disconnect from the world and catch up with my husband.
AZF: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a young entrepreneur who is just starting out?
RT: Focus on building resilience. Entrepreneurship is full of highs and lows, and setbacks are inevitable, but resilience will help you keep moving forward even when things get tough. Instead of aiming for perfection, embrace mistakes as learning opportunities, and don’t be discouraged by challenges – they’re part of the process. Staying adaptable, persistent, and focused on your goals will help you navigate the uncertainties of starting a business and ultimately bring you closer to success.
AZF: What excites you most about being an entrepreneur?
RT: The excitement often comes from the sense of freedom, creativity, and control it brings. I can pursue my ideas, turning my passions into services that make a real difference. I’m driven by the thrill of building something from the ground up, the possibility of financial independence, and the flexibility to set my schedule and work on my terms. There’s also a sense of fulfillment in problem-solving, overcoming challenges, and the personal growth that comes with taking risks and learning from failures. Above all, the chance to make an impact – whether by creating jobs, serving customers, or innovating within an industry – can be deeply rewarding.
