Meet Dr. Audra Horney, founder of Modern Therapy AZ, which offers mental health services primarily to men seeking therapy for the first time.
“Last summer—after almost 10 years of working full-time as a therapist—I finally felt ready to open my own private practice. I wanted to specialize in the niche I had become most passionate about, and offer a service that I believe is severely lacking. This was the motivation behind my business—Modern Therapy AZ—a welcoming space for MEN seeking THERAPY. I believe therapy has become a feminized service and unfortunately is not always an inclusive or comfortable space for men. At Modern Therapy AZ, I provide direct and collaborative therapy to men struggling with a range of concerns. I go beyond validation and provide tangible, solution-focused strategies for long-term change. It’s my mission to normalize and destigmatize therapy for men. Given the success I’ve had with my business in the past year, I’m now expanding my services to offer business coaching to other therapists (especially women) who want to improve their business model, marketing, and clinical expertise to better support men seeking therapy.”
AZF: What is your “life motto?”
DAH: Do no harm but take no shit.
AZF: Did you always know that you wanted to be entrepreneur? If not, when did you realize that it was the right path right for you?
DAH: I didn’t! I was quite happy with working for other people until 1-2 years ago when I felt the itch and wanted more. I had no idea this entrepreneur was dormant inside of me and I’ve been so proud of myself for going all in!
AZF: How do you feel best supported?
DAH: By fellow entrepreneurs who understand the hustle and dedication required to build something great. Having someone I think is a badass look at ME and tell me that I’m a badass is the best validation ever.
AZF: What motivates you to keep going amidst the challenges that come with being an entrepreneur?
DAH: Core to my motivation is my dedication to my clients. To walk side-by-side with someone through their darkest struggles is a humbling experience that I do not take lightly. The least I can do is commit myself to this work fully and do what’s in my power to help more men receive the support they deserve.
AZF: Describe your perfect Saturday morning.
DAH: Sleep in until 7AM, husband and daughter bring me coffee in bed, hit up a great workout class at Groundwrk, then meet up with my family for brunch at Lux or Fame!
AZF: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a young entrepreneur who is just starting out?
DAH: Betting on yourself is scary but so worth it.
AZF: What excites you most about being an entrepreneur?
DAH: The limitless potential! One year ago I just wanted to open my own practice, but I’ve been blown away by the relationships, opportunities, and possibilities that have branched off from this endeavor!
