Name: Laetitia Hua
Age: 25
Title: Miss Maricopa County 2019. Lawyer. Criminal Justice Advocate.
Married/Single: Definitely not married. (I don’t even know what I want for breakfast, let alone who I want to spend the rest of my life with.)
Kids: 0
City you live in: Scottsdale
A typical day in my life includes…
my day is different every day, but it often includes listening to the stories of people impacted by our prison system, drinking a lot of coffee, making appearances at charity events, and meeting with state representatives to discuss criminal justice bills.
I was born…
in Paris.
My favorite thing about Arizona…
the sunshine – especially now having lived through four Scottish winters while studying law overseas.
I’m listening to…
Beethoven Piano Concert No.5 and my mother venting about how I moved one of her creams to another spot in our medicine cabinet, and now her entire life is in disarray.
My family…
refer to answer above. (Love you, mom!)
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be…
Empress Wu, the only female emperor in the history of China. I admire her for being a multi-dimensional and controversial woman.
One thing I cannot live without…
kindness.
When I was younger, I wanted to be…
a unicorn. That still hasn’t changed.
I’m inspired by…
ideals.
The one person who motivates me is…
Dorothea Dix. She lobbied state legislatures and Congress for more humane treatment of inmates with mental health needs in the 19thcentury. Her work is still relevant, as we still have not fully addressed the human rights violations that go on in our prison systems today.
If I could change anything in the world, it would be…
the way our criminal justice system treats the wealthy and the poor differently.
The perfect day would be…
waking up in Australia and volunteering at a koala sanctuary.
My first job was…
being a hair model for a British stylist. I got my hair dyed pink and purple, fell on the runway, and had big bruises on my knees for about two weeks.
My favorite escape…
Santorini.
My life…
feels really rushed at the moment, but I am trying to find inner peace.
I’m currently working on…
reducing Arizona’s incarceration rates and reminding people that we need to care about citizens behind bars. If we truly want to make our community safer, we need to actively help inmates readjust to society so they don’t go back to prison (and almost half of them do).
Always…
define your own standard of success.
Never…
let the challenges of life make you bitter.
Favorite Quote…
“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” – T. S. Eliot
Biggest Dream…
I have lots. I would like to travel around the world, bridge cultural differences, continue to support charitable causes, and serve my community.
My Pet Peeve(s)…
angry drivers.
