Best time to book for domestic and international travel:

Grand Velas, Cabo San Lucas

• Typically, the earliest one can book is 330 days in advance. For international flights, booking at least six to nine months in advance is ideal. For domestic flights, search at least six months in advance, especially if traveling during peak season or for a popular event.

• For spontaneous travel, deals resurface about 45 days before departure, though this comes with the risk of sold-out flights, particularly for direct routes and premium cabins, which tend to be the first to fill up. Thanksgiving airfare is best to secure by early October. For Christmas and New Year’s, the end of October. After that, flights tend to go up in price again.

“Ultimately, the ideal time to book a flight is when you are fully prepared to commit to your travel plans, as this secures your booking and protects you from potential price increases or limited availability,” Rice said.

Ways to save money:

Salzburg, Austria

• Holiday festivals offer a way to immerse yourself in local culture without spending. Many cities host free festive markets and events that capture the season’s spirit and provide access to unique, handmade gifts from local artisans.

“Christmas markets capture the essence of the holiday season, offering a magical experience with festive lights, seasonal delicacies, and handcrafted holiday merchandise that evoke the warmth and nostalgia of childhood Christmases,” Rice said.

• Smart accommodation strategies can also result in significant savings. Last-minute cancellations during the holiday rush often open up rooms at top-tier hotels, so joining waitlists might be a way to secure premium rooms at reduced rates.

• Bundled experiences, such as river cruises or guided land tours, often include discounts on airfare, accommodations, site visits, and meals. These packages eliminate the time and guesswork of putting every element of the trip together. Cruises and guided land tours offer excellent value by covering major costs upfront.

• Airfare near the holidays usually sells at a premium price, but allowing flight availability to guide your destination can reveal cost-effective opportunities. Flexibility with travel plans often leads to more affordable and exciting destinations.

• Road trips or visiting family can offer substantial savings, especially if you use their home as a base for local excursions. This reduces accommodation and airfare costs while allowing for quality time with loved ones and nearby adventures.
