Yelp recently released its “Top 100 Burger Spots in America” list. Among the competitive roster, local Tempe restaurant Green New American Vegetarian secured the 18th spot.
Green is one of many vegan restaurants in the country that made it on the list in what Yelp calls the “burger revolution.” This revolution showcases restaurants that offer vegan-vegetarian burgers, fusion food and specialty-crafted buns on the top of this year’s list. Yelp’s rankings took into account six defining “trends” to determine this year’s list, including “BBQ rules,” plant-based sizzles, size, “east-west is best,” “patties, your way” and the type of buns used for the burger.
Green is a 100% vegan-vegetarian restaurant that aims to cater to all palates by blending different cultures and cooking styles. The restaurant’s commitment to the environment and wellness is evident in various aspects, such as the use of unrefined sugar in its house-made drinks and the careful selection of fresh, organic and non-GMO ingredients, all without compromising on flavor.
“I’m trying to create all the [favorite] foods you can’t always get as a vegetarian or a vegan,” says Chef Damon Brasch.
One of the reasons Green New American Vegetarian earned its spot on the charts is its signature dish, the “Big Wac.” This double-cheeseburger is packed with lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and special sauce, all served on a sesame seed bun. Yelpers also rave about other menu items, like Green’s Classic Burger, fried mock chicken sandwich and the Chicago Cheesesteak.
“This is our go-to spot. Seriously these are the greatest burgers we’ve had since becoming vegetarian over a decade ago. So much YUM. Ask for a side of their Wac sauce and get an order of Thyme Fries—and remember to thank me later. Whether you want a new place to do meatless Monday, or if you’re full-on vegan, this is the spot for you,” says Yelp Elite Keith T.
In addition to delectable burgers, this fast-casual restaurant also offers a selection of plant-based ice creams called “tSoynamis,” which is a specialty at Green’s sister restaurant, Nami. Available in either chocolate or vanilla with a variety of choose-your-own toppings, these soft-serve ice creams are made with organic and unrefined cane sugar, organic soy and coconut milk, and are served in biodegradable cups along with biodegradable spoons, reflecting Green’s commitment to sustainability.
