Foodie news roundup for the week of July 30.
For the entire month of August, anyone who attends or works at Arizona State University and stops into Social Hall in Tempe for dinner or drinks can score a 15-percent discount with a valid university ID. Stop by between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. daily and enjoy the discount on top of already-low happy hour food and drink deals, or use it while sampling something new from Chef Jason Diaz’ Latin-inspired menu.
Celebrate National Root Beer Float Day (Monday, August 6) at TEXAZ Grill where you can scoop up a gourmet root beer float for only $5, made with rich, craft-brewed Abita Root Beer and creamy Blue Bell vanilla ice cream.
Ready for some cheesy news? A 50-lb wheel of cheese now calls Babbo Italian Eatery’s Scottsdale location its new home. Each week, a new dish, mixed in the Grana Padano cheese wheel, will be unveiled on Babbo’s Instagram (@babboitalianeatery). Those wanting this experience can do so Wednesday through Sunday.
Southern Rail offers a one-of-a-kind kid’s menu incorporating the dishes into some of the most beloved children’s books (Changing Hands Bookstore is right next door to this Phoenix restaurant, after all). The restaurant rotates 15 to 20 different books so that each kid will have something new to read each time. The unique kids menu is also available at Beckett’s Table.
Press Coffee (pictured) has launched a new app making it easier to grab your cup of joe in the morning. The app lets customers order and pay ahead, then get a notification when their order is ready to pick up. It is available for use at the local roaster’s seven Valley cafes. It is available on the App Store and Google Play (search “Press Coffee Roasters”).
The original location of Crust on Indian Bend Road has closed and is moving into a state of the art 3,500-sq.-ft. building in Mercado Del Lago off of Hayden and Royal Palm Roads. Slated to open during the month of August, this flagship location is currently under construction, and the restaurant will offer a fresh open atmosphere along with the same great East Coast Italian food.
On Sunday, August 5 (National Oyster Day), guests can get a fresh taste of the sea at Ocean Prime with half-price oysters all day long, as well as half-off bottles of wine under $99.
Throughout the entire month of August, Miracle Mile Deli will be featuring a different sandwich with fries and a pickle for just $9, every week:
August 1-5: The New Yorker
August 6-12: Brisket Sandwich
August 13-19: The Straw
August 20-31: Combo Sandwich
