The beer community across the globe has come together in support of those impacted by the Maui wildfires in August through a special collaboration beer effort, The Kōkua Project.
Coordinated by Maui Brewing Company, The Kōkua Project is inspired by Sierra Nevada’s Resilience Project of 2018 where one one beer is brewed by many. 700 breweries across the U.S. and internationally, including 15 Arizona breweries, have volunteered to brew the same beer and donate the proceeds to the Global Empowerment Mission, the nonprofit organization facilitating the Maui Brewing Company Fire Fund.
Kōkua, translated as “extending help to others” in the Hawaiian language, is a Session IPA featuring a refreshing wave of tropical hop aroma atop a delicate malt base. Beer lovers and those looking to support Maui’s relief efforts can find Kōkua on draft in many taprooms across every state as part of The Kōkua Project now and throughout 2024.
In Arizona, 15 breweries have pledged to brew Kōkua in support of the individuals affected by the Maui wildfires. Residents and visitors can purchase the collaboration beer to help support The Kōkua Project’s ongoing recovery efforts at one of the following local breweries:
- Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.
- Black Ridge Brewery
- Dark Sky Brewing Company
- Four Peaks Brewing Co
- Goldwater Brewing
- Huss Brewing
- Lumberyard Brewing Co.
- Moto Sonora Brewing Company
- Mudshark Brewing Company
- North Mountain Brewing Company
- O.H.S.O. Brewery + Distillery
- Patent 139 Brewing Co.
- Peoria Artisan Brewing
- Roses By The Stairs Brewing
- Simple Machine Brewing Co.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has estimated that the series of devastating wildfires in Maui earlier this year caused nearly $6 billion in damage, including the destruction of over 2,200 buildings comprising mostly residential homes, as well as crucial infrastructure and many historic landmarks in Lahaina.
